Captivated By You Review

Captivated By You (Crossfire Series) by Sylvia Day

Overview by Amazon:

Gideon calls me his angel, but he’s the miracle in my life. My gorgeous, wounded warrior, so determined to slay my demons while refusing to face his own.

The vows we’d exchanged should have bound us tighter than blood and flesh. Instead they opened old wounds, exposed pain and insecurities, and lured bitter enemies out of the shadows. I felt him slipping from my grasp, my greatest fears becoming my reality, my love tested in ways I wasn’t sure I was strong enough to bear.

At the brightest time in our lives, the darkness of his past encroached and threatened everything we’d worked so hard for. We faced a terrible choice: the familiar safety of the lives we’d had before each other or the fight for a future that suddenly seemed an impossible and hopeless dream.…

It seems like everyone and their sister is currently reading this book. I pre-ordered it and started reading it today. In the midst of a boring meeting, I secretly pulled it up on my phone as I was anxious to see where Gideon and Eva were headed. It’s been a long time since the third book was published and a big shock that the original trilogy was now a series of five books. This was met with some very harsh criticism online, but I enjoy the characters, so I didn’t mind reading more about them, I just didn’t like how long the wait was between books.

We pick up where the last book left off. Gideon and Eva are secretly married and just coming out of the shadows from hiding their reunion. This is a relatively quiet time for them. They spend time together simply enjoying and savouring each other.

One thing that is very different with this book is the alternative narration between Gideon and Eva. The author said on her website that the next two books would be Gideon’s story to tell, so I guess this is her way of making him more accessible to the reader. We know his thoughts and feelings much deeper than just through Eva’s perspective.

There is a lot more we learn about Gideon. We learn about his abuse and his nightmares. His family plays a larger role in this book. We get to know his sister, mother and step-father where in the past, they were mere glimpses. We also get to see how much he loves Eva and what he fears about their relationship. I loved getting to know more about the business empire that he runs and the never ending schemes and plots he is involved with. It helped flesh out the billionaire business man tag he fulfills.

Eva has stopped running for most of the book. We see more strength in her than we have in the past. She is like a tigress protecting Gideon and also pushing him to open up to her. She hates that he manages situations and then tells her later about them. She has brought some normalcy to his life. They hang out with friends, go sing karaoke, have movie nights and chaperone his sister. They spend their nights together and settle into domestic bliss – as much as they can.

They still have problems. They fight; they make up, and then fight again. It also appears that Gideon’s many enemies have discovered ‘the chink in his armor’, Eva. There are a lot of people coming at the couple, trying to destroy what they have built together. It kind of felt overwhelming and I don’t know how Gideon can possibly manage all the threats coming at them.

As usual with this series, it is highly sexual. The therapist they share says that Eva uses sex to get closer emotionally and Gideon uses it to forget. The scenes are very hot and steamy. These two have amazing chemistry and truly mind blowing sex. It kind of ruins you for real life, because who wouldn’t want a sex god like Gideon in their bed. I have no problem with how graphic the sex scenes are as sex is a very important part of who they are as a couple. It’s their touchstone and a valuable method of communication between them.

I think this book was worth the wait. I really enjoyed where the story headed. Some loose ends were tied up and I’m glad the author was able and willing to do this within a series and not drag it out. I know that I read this book super-fast and I will definitely go back and re-read it to savour the story over the next week. Now I just have to find out how long until the final book One for you is released…let’s hope it’s not as long as last time!

Here’s my review of the series to date!
