A Highlander’s Passion by Vonnie Davis
Overview by Amazon:
As a bear-shifter in a pack roaming the Scottish countryside, Bryce Matheson embodies brute force and untamed abandon. As a widower, he’s running scared. When Bryce attempted to open his scarred heart to another, she grew tired of waiting for him to state his intentions, and the unearthly beauty spurned him for someone who wasn’t worthy. But now that fate has conspired to set Kenzie Denune free once again, Bryce vows to finally win her love.
Kenzie is a witch who summons her powers to protect those too weak to care for themselves. After surviving an abusive husband, she swears off men—even men like Bryce, whose iron muscles make her knees weak, and whose piercing eyes fill her with longing. Her life’s purpose is to help others. However, dark forces have different plans for her gifts. To save herself, Kenzie must team up with the shifter who has always stirred her soul—and trust in a passion powerful enough to set her blood aflame.
I have to admit that when I requested this book from Netgalley, the cover and the author were enough for me to hit the request button, but really didn’t pay too much attention to the plot. A hot highlander was enough to make me interested! Well, I was in for a lot of surprises with this book! Not only was it set in modern day, it’s a paranormal story! I have read books with Gods and time travel, but never really about shifters and such. But I figured, hey, why not?
I am SO glad I settled into this book! While there is a lot of plot to follow and paranormal elements that were new to me and this book is part of a series, it had to be one of the hottest books I have read in a long time. This book has straight up sex, but it’s also scintillating. Bryce likely the best alpha male I have ever read. Vonnie Davis has created a character that is so compelling.
When I first started the book I thought because I was reading an ARC that I had a few spelling mistakes it in, but then I realized that the dialogue was written as Scots would speak. It took some getting used to ‘fer’ and ‘ken’, but it really helped to set the characters and story. And I have to say that Bryce uses some bawdy language, but his dirty talk literally curled my toes.
Let’s talk about the hero, Bryce. He’s a bear shifter, brother to the Laird, widower and father to little Colleen. We see many sides of him in the story. But one thing he is through and through is an alpha male. He is like the definition of it. He has had his chances with Kenzie and messed them up. Now that she is also widowed, he wants her back with a vengeance. Bryce on a mission was like sex on a stick. One thing that Vonnie Davis does really, really well is write awesome foreplay and sex scenes. Check out Bryce telling Kenzie what he wants,
“I want ye so badly right now, to show ye how much I will protect ye, I dinna need a bed or a sofa or a wall. Hell, not even the feckin’ floor. I will hold ye against me and wrap those luscious thighs around me hips while I take ye standing. Then I will bend ye over the arm of that chair by the fireplace. I’m warning ye. I’m so fukin’ horny fer me intended right now I can barely think straight.”
I honestly think that if I had a man speak to me like that I would either be a puddle on the floor or launch myself at him. The sex is descriptive and passionate like Bryce. He’s also emotional, which I adored. He isn’t afraid to bare his soul to Kenzie and tell her what is in his heart. He needs to do a lot of wooing of her, although he calls it romance and seduction. When Kenzie challenges him, he tells her,
“Aye. I made the biggest mistake of me life. Fer I have loved ye every day since, even when ye were wedded to another. “ He crossed the room, and the sensual electricity between them arced when he enveloped his arms around her. “When it comes to ye – the tenderness, the affection, the indulgent nature…aye, the deep love continues to grow. Call it passion, if ye want. I’m calling it forever. I was wrong to push ye away so that ye became vulnerable to Duncan. I willna let ye go again.”
Once again, this man is a warrior, a sex machine and he shares his emotions. What more could you want? It doesn’t hurt that he wears a kilt on a regular basis and has a body like a god.
Kenzie is a survivor. She has been through losing Bryce twice, losing two pregnancies and an abusive marriage. She is naturally reluctant to become involved with Bryce. Even when she gives her consent she is still hesitant. At first I found her wavering to be annoying, but when I reconsidered her position and the danger she was in from the supernatural world, I understood how she couldn’t bear another loss.
The secondary characters are awesome! Effie is a riot! I really love stories that have an older, wily woman bossing people around! Hero by Samantha Young has one and characters like Effie just add a great dialogue and humour. I loved that Effie could say the things that you hoped to hear and wanted to hear, but no one in their right minds would actually say. The rest of the Matheson clan make plenty of appearance on the pages and there is no doubt they are a united family.
I learned a lot about the paranormal world that Vonnie Davis has created. She has taught me about wiccan’s, witchcraft, magic and shifters. For someone who is not a huge fan of supernatural elements outside of vampires, I found that it added another layer to the characters and kept things very busy in Northern Scotland!
This was a great book. I think what I liked so much was Bryce – could you tell? He was captivating by the words he spoke to the actions he took. He is a true alpha male and if reading about one of those doing what they do best gets your interest, then this is a book you must add to your shelves!
