Much Ado About Highlanders by May McGoldrick
Overview by Publisher:
Highland warrior Alexander Macpherson has lost his wife. When he agreed to take Kenna Mackay as his bride to advance his clan’s power in the north, he expected a bit of an adjustment. He didn’t expect the sharp-tongued beauty to run away on their wedding night. Still, Alexander wants his runaway bride…and he has the sneaking suspicion that she wants him, too.
Kenna Mackay thought she was safe in a priory full of nuns learning the craft of healing, but when she is kidnapped by her own husband, the battle of wits begins anew. But even as passions ignite, a deadly secret from Kenna’s past rises to the surface and put their new love in jeopardy. As a heartless villain closes in, two headstrong lovers find themselves locked in a struggle between evil and the power of undying love. And this time, Alexander is determined he will not lose his wife again.
This awesome Highlander novel is based on the Shakespeare play, Much Ado About Nothing. I have to admit, that I was unfamiliar with this play by Master Shakespeare as my high school focused on Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet, so after I read this book, I had to research Much Ado to see the connections.
Alexander’s bride ran away on his wedding night. Granted, he spent his wedding night in the bed of another woman, so it would seem justified. Kenna has been at a priory for the past six months. Through treachery Kenna and her cousin are kidnapped and forced into the presence of her husband and his clan.
I love stories that take place on the road. The kidnapped women are forced to travel with the men. This is when characters personalities come to life. Kenna is fierce! She swears, she fights and she is beyond passionate. I adored her!
Kenna is a skilled healer, and well known for her abilities. There is one ability that is just developing. Kenna’s mother left her a small stone that gives her powers to heal. This paranormal aspect is fascinating as they young couple are being hunted by a power crazed English knight. The story revolves around the reconciliation of Kenna and Alexander and the danger from the English forces hunting her for the stone.
Kenna and Alexander were so much fun to read! I loved how manly and confident Alexander was. He was so capable and more than up for the task of matching wits and swords with Kenna. She is a challenging woman and it takes a strong man to partner with her without breaking that amazing spirit. Alexander has done her wrong, but so has Kenna. Their reconciliation was passionate and exciting. Of course he is an amazing lover and the sensual teasing was downright thrilling. What I really liked about this story was that we get to know the characters so well. The deep fear that Kenna has for her future and the way Alexander makes her feel safe enough to trust him.
The hunt for the stones across Scotland was perfect. At first I was worried that this would detract from the love story, but it was the perfect conflict to keep our characters working together. What I found hard to read was the treatment of the Scots by the raiders. None of it was a surprise, but the brutality was hard to stomach.
This book has an amazing love story with fiery characters! I adored Kenna and Alexander is the stuff of Highland dreams. I heartily recommend this story!
