Must Love Kilts

Must Love Kilts by Angela Quarles

must love kilts

Overview by Publisher:

The Jacobite Rebellion–not the best time to get drunk, hook up with a guy, and lose your sister.

A drunken bet…
When computer game designer Traci Campbell gets too close and personal with a bottle of Glenfiddich while vacationing in Scotland, she whisks her kilt-obsessed sister back to 1689 to prove hot guys in kilts are a myth. Hello, hundred bucks! But all bets are off when she meets Iain, the charming playboy in a to-die-for kilt.

Wrong place, wrong time, wrong name…
Iain MacCowan regularly falls in love at the drop of his kilt. The mysterious red-haired lass with the odd accent is no different. But when his new love is discovered to be a Campbell, the most distrusted name in the Highlands, his dalliance endangers his clan’s rebellion against King William.

It’s all hijinks in the Highlands until your sister disappears…
Traci thinks men are only good for one thing–thank you, Iain!–but when she awakens once again in Ye Olde Scotland and her sister is gone, she must depend on the last person she wants to spend more time with. He wants to win a heart, she wants to keep hers, but can these two realize they’re meant for each other before the Jacobite rebellion pulls them apart?

I love this series!  Each book features a strong and independent twenty first century woman who travels back in time to a place where things are very different.

This one features Traci and her sister Fiona.  They are from America, but are vacationing in Scotland.  Traci’s family is crazy about Scotland.  They participate in Highland Games every year and the dancing was on the agenda growing up.  Traci never shared the fascination for everything Scottish.  The trouble all begins when she bets her sister that there are no hot Scots in kilts.  (One a side note:  my twitter feed @kiltsandswords is FULL of hot men in kilts)

Using the silver card case that transports people back in time, drunken Traci and Fiona head back in time to 1689 and the fun begins!  While they came prepared in period costumes meant for the Highland games they would be attending, they didn’t think through much else.  Landing in clan territory that was not friendly to the Campbells, nor with an escort, they are in trouble…

Until the hot Scot rescues the ladies.  Iain is definitely handsome and friendly.  He’s that jovial and friendly guy at the bar who flirts with the ladies and no one takes seriously.  More drinking happens and then we flash forward to the morning.  Traci wakes up in the inn and with the mother of all hangovers.  However, she can’t find her sister.  Being chased by strange men, she flits back to the future to get her shit together.  A few quick purchases and she is ready to go find Fiona in medieval Scotland.

Traci reunites with Iain quickly.  She follows him on her newly purchased horse.  It turns out that Las Vegas isn’t the only place that drunk people make bad decisions.  Traci and Iain handfasted in their drunken adventures.  When Iain greets his wife, it was hilarious!

That is one of the things I like so much about these books.  While there are serious and dramatic elements, there are also light hearted moments that bring a balance to the books.  Traci and Iain both have introspective moments about their lives and how they perceive the world around them.  I really enjoyed that as it really created depth to the characters and made them multi faceted.

Once Iain and Traci are reunited, the search is on for Fiona.  We meet a cast of characters as they traipse all over the Highlands.  I won’t give away the plot, but the beauty of Scotland is revealed through the eyes of Traci.  What is so enjoyable is having a modern woman describe and experience life in a completely different time.  Angela Quarles has a wonderful and vivid imagination.

If you are interested in time travelling, historical and contemporary romance, then you will love this book and series!  Definitely check out Must Love Chainmail, Must Love Breeches and Must Love Kilts!

Unbound – Colours of Love

Unbound – Colours of Love by Kathryn Taylor

unbound colors of love

Overview by Publisher:

Grace is young and has led a sheltered life. She hasn’t yet taken much of an interest in men. It’s only while doing an internship in London, where she meets the alluring Jonathan Huntington, that our sleeping beauty is awoken from her slumber. Jonathan is rich, incredibly attractive, and stems from British royalty – but he is a far cry from Prince Charming. He lures Grace ever deeper into his world of sinister passion, and she is sucked further and further into the maelstrom of her own growing desires. But when Jonathan demands she do the unthinkable to prove her love for him, she realizes just how dangerous her feelings for him are.

I found this book on Netgalley.  It was published last year and had some positive reviews, so I thought I’d give it a try.  What intrigued me was that this book was written in German and translated.  I couldn’t really tell, except for a few phrases that seemed out of place in English vernacular.

Grace comes to London for a prestigious internship.  She makes the hugest fool out of herself when she arrives at the airport with the owner of the company.  It was one of those truly cringe worthy events in life where you wish you could just evaporate!  It set the story up well as I liked how the author had a sense of humour with her characters.

Jonathan takes a personal interest in Grace and it quickly escalates into a forbidden office romance.  There are definite shades of Fifty in this book.  Jonathan has deep sexual desires and he wants Grace to embrace his world.  His is an enigma to everyone around him, especially Grace.

His relationships with his mentor, sister and best friend help to define him more than the time he spends with Grace in some aspects.  Part of me wanted Grace to end it and live the single life in London, but another part really wanted her to explore the relationship with him.  It was a good push and pull for the reader.

The sex scenes are plentiful in the book.  Grace is a virgin and naïve to the ways of the men.  I found the descriptions of the sex scenes different.  ‘Pearl’ and ‘Mount of Venus’ were frequently used to describe sex.  While those terms were distracting, the scenes between Grace and Jonathan were hot and steamy.

I read the second book in the trilogy out of curiosity, but it was interesting to read the other reviews.  The feeling among other readers was that the third book was unnecessary.  I liked the first book and found it to be another Fifty themed story that was engaging.

Beauty and the Highland Beast

Beauty and the Highland Beast (A Highland Fairy Tale Novel) by Lecia Cornwall

beauty and the highland beast

Overview by Publisher:

Powerful and dangerous highlander Dair Sinclair was once the favored son of his clan, The Sinclairs of Carraig Brigh. With Dair at the helm, Sinclair ships circled the globe bringing home incredible fortune. Until one deadly mission when Dair is captured, tortured and is unable to save his young cousin. He returns home breaking under the weight of his guilt and becomes known as the Madman of Carraig Brigh.

When a pagan healer predicts that only a virgin bride can heal his son’s body and mind, Dair’s father sets off to find the perfect wife for his son. At the castle of the fearsome McLeods, he meets lovely and kind Fia MacLeod.

Although Dair does his best to frighten Fia, she sees the man underneath the damage and uses her charm and special gifts to heal his mind and heart. Will Dair let Fia love him or is he cursed with madness forever?

Beauty and the Beast is such a classic tale.  This story is a beautiful take on the fairy tale.

The Beast is a character that has gone through a profound change. In this case, Dair had the world at his feet.  A pirate who has made his clan wealthy, he is the heir to the Sinclair clan.  A horrific event has changed everything.  His body is no longer one that women chase.  His mind is broken and damaged.  His night terrors shake the castle with their force.  He truly has become a beast of a man.

His father is desperate to save his son.  When an old midwife tells him that only a virgin can save him, he heads to the McLeods where there are twelve daughters to choose from.  The one that catches his attention is Fia.

Fia is a sheltered and coddled young lass.  She is very protected by her family because she has wounds and scars from her childhood.  She has a kind and gentle nature and works to protect the wounded animals on McLean lands.  No one expects much from Fia in her clan.  They don’t see her as worthless, but rather as too fragile to be of real use.

Some of the most comedic moments in an otherwise serious story are from Bezelbub.  This is Fia’s cat and he is a terror.  Moments of brevity come courtesy of his behaviour and the men of clan Sinclair.

Dair is aware of the reason Fia has come to his lands.  He is determined to never marry or even take over as Laird.  He lives in his mad world and sees the terrible things that he witnessed over and over again.  He mourns his men lost and his beautiful cousin.  He doesn’t believe for a minute that Fia can heal him, but against his intentions, he can’t help be drawn to her.  Her beautiful spirit calms his soul and she is able to reach him like no one else.

OF course there is drama in this story.  Treachery and traitors abound this story making what could have been a simple story complex and unique.  But at the heart is a lovely story about two wounded people who have found hope and love with each other.  This is a lovely story!

MacLean’s Passion

MacLean’s Passion (A Highland Pride Novel) by Sharon Cullen

macleans passion

Overview by Publisher:

Colin MacLean has always felt like a black sheep—especially after his brothers are slain before his eyes in the Battle of Culloden. A smuggler by trade, Colin makes for an embarrassing chieftain. He can’t even save his friends from their British pursuers without getting himself captured. But before he is martyred by the hangman’s noose, Colin escapes with his cellmate, a brave lad he’s come to admire. It’s only in the depths of the Highlands that Colin discovers the lad is a lass—and a bonnie one at that.

Raised by her older brothers, Maggie Sinclair can drink a pint in no time flat and wield a dagger with the best of ’em. Still, men have always excluded her and women have always shunned her. Colin makes her feel different. His wild spirit and rugged good looks have Maggie reconsidering her less than ladylike ways. For the first time, she’s tempted to put on a gown, just to see how Colin would react. She can only imagine what might happen next: a kiss . . . a touch . . . and perhaps enough sultry heat to melt a cold Highland night.

When a man is down and out, it can be the end or the start of something great.  Colin is less than a day away from hanging in an English prison, but he manages to escape and take his cell mate with him.  It is not until he has recovered from his wounds that he realizes that the lad, is actually a lass!

Maggie is not the average lady of the manor.  She wears breeches, fights in the lists and can swear up a storm.  After slipping away to fight at Culloden, she was imprisoned.  Luckily, she passed as a boy and was unmolested by the soldiers.

Now that she is on the run with Colin, things are confusing.  She wants to be the woman she has always been, but there is a part of her that really enjoys the new found feelings she has.  Attraction and lust have never had a place in her life, but Colin changes all that.

Colin doesn’t have much to offer Maggie.  He is a wanted man and his lands are under English control.  If you have been watching Outlander, the time period after Culloden is not hard to imagine.  Brutal English control over the Highlands makes life dangerous and difficult.  Tomorrow isn’t certain and life hangs in the balance.  The tension runs high throughout the story and it’s one difficult journey after another.

Colin is one of those characters who has a lust for life.  He is a smuggler and a natural risk taker.  He does not want to take risks with Maggie, however.  It’s the interesting study of when a man accepts responsibility for things larger than his own world.  He now has a clan to care for and a hoyden of a woman.

I enjoyed Maggie’s story.  She struggles to be herself when everyone around her is telling her to change.  I appreciated that Colin was the only one who saw her value and appreciated her skills.  While she may never darn his socks, she will have his back.  Colin brings Maggie’s feminity and her desires to the forefront and she blossoms under his care.

You really can’t go wrong with a Highland romance novel.  Sweeping vistas, hot men in kilts and tense politics make for a great story!

Rake’s Redemption

Rake’s Redemption (Wind Dragons MC Series) by Chantal Fernando

rakes redemption

Overview by Publisher:

Rake is known for being up for anything, in and out of the bedroom. He’s wild, he’s deadly, yet quick with a joke or a stolen kiss. Known as the player of the WDMC, he loves women, the more the merrier. However, behind his womanizing façade, Rake hides the pain of losing his first love, Bailey. He hasn’t loved anyone since, and doesn’t think he ever will.

Seven years after their split, Rake and Bailey run into each other at the MC’s favorite club. Old wounds resurface, secrets are spilled…and passionate feelings are awakened. But they’ve each done things to hurt the other, hurt them too badly to get over it—haven’t they? Only when Bailey’s connection to Rake puts her in danger from another Club member does he realize that there’s nothing he won’t do to protect her—and claim her as his once again.

I was a huge Sons of Anarchy fan until the sixth season – things just got too real for me.  But I do love a good biker story and this one seemed interesting.

It was so interesting and great that I have now read almost all of the books in the series and have a series hard on for this author.  I actually even broke down and got a Kindle Unlimited account so that I could read her backlist at my leisure.

This series has larger than life characters that make you pay attention to them!  You can’t help but be sucked into their world and the nuances and rules that go along with being a biker’s old lady.

Rake is the dirtiest of the brothers.  In the other books, his whoring is very well documented.  He has never met a threesome he didn’t like and his lap is never empty.  He is the quintessential player, one that will never get serious about a women.  Until he runs into his ex girlfriend, Bailey.

There is no love like the first one.  You remember the long hours talking and kissing.  The world seems like it’s your oyster and anything is possible.  Adam (as he was known then) and Bailey were high school sweethearts, but that moniker doesn’t seem enough.  Passionate and fierce about each other, they were the couple that was for real.  Until a terrible break up and a long separation.

Rake is not happy to see Bailey again.  The feeling is mutual.  Bailey has grown up since they last met.  She is a teacher and has a young daughter to take care of.  A man whore like Rake doesn’t really fit into the life she has built, but that doesn’t really matter to Rake.

He flaunts his women in Bailey’s face, yet can’t stand the sight of her at his club, with his sister or god forbid, with a man.  Green is not an attractive colour for Rake.  He needs to get Bailey out of his system, but once she is threatened by a rival gang, he’s done playing games.  She is his.

If the alpha male is a big turn on for you, then this book and series are perfect!  Rake and his brothers are bad boys, but once they find their woman, they purr like kitty cats.  The sex scenes are off the charts and the author takes her time to create spine tingling chemistry.  I actually found myself wishing I could be a part of this world because it was so unique and attractively packaged – even with the illegal and brutal element.

I can’t wait to read about the other brothers of the Wind Dragon MC and the lovely women who will put them in their place!

Breaking His Rules

Breaking His Rules by RC Matthews

breaking his rules

Overview by Publisher:

When I landed the best bartending job in downtown Chicago, the rules were as clear as the Grey Goose martini I mixed for him. Don’t sleep with the patrons. I had no problem with that. Money didn’t impress me. But Damon Baxter’s eyes did. Midnight blue, just like the name of his nightclub. The way they undressed me made me consider risking the most sought after job in the service industry. Nailing the position had been hard. Obeying the rules? Even harder.

Good thing I like it hard. I was never one for following orders. For one night with him, I would have sold my soul to the devil. And that’s exactly what I did. Let me tell you, hell in the company of Damon Baxter was blissfully hot. I offered him a single night of pleasure, but when he demanded another in that deep and sexy whisper, what could I say? He was my boss, and I always aimed to please…when it pleased me.

He didn’t care that I broke his rules. But was I ready to break my own?

This book was really a fun read!  IT has been heavily influenced by Fifty Shades of Grey and Crossfire Series, but this is not a negative!  There were so many times reading those series that things felt long and drawn out, where this book gets right to the point.  It was refreshing!

Samantha is a new bartender at Midnight Blue, the hottest nightclub in Chicago.  Her first night in the  VIP lounge tempts her to break the rules set down by the control freak owner-don’t screw with the clientele.  She almost can’t help herself because the man flirting in front of her is so hot he’s about to give her an orgasm from his blistering stare.

Turns out he is the owner and he’s about to break his own rules with Samantha.  One steaming hot night in the club turns into more and more.  But this isn’t as simple as the billionaire boss resucing his bartender from a life of drudgery.

Samantha has a complex story.  One that takes time to reveal. I liked that she didn’t need Damon, but wanted him.  That distinction was key to making the relationship work.  While Damon didn’t grow up rich, he certainly lives the lifestyle now and moves in the same circles as Samantha’s former life.  There is a lot of depth to the motivations behind Samantha, Damon and the secondary characters and it seeps its way into the relationship.

While this book had some of the flavour of the traditional billionaire romance genre, it had enough curve balls that it became unique and original.  It’s very hot and steamy, which was fabulous, but there is also a very good story here too.

Stormswept

Stormswept by Sabrina Jeffries

stormswept

Overview by Publisher:

New York Times bestseller Sabrina Jeffries reignites a daring love affair in this intriguing tale of desire and deception—originally written as Deborah Martin and newly revised for today’s audience.

The first wedding night that Lady Juliana St. Albans spent with the dark and daring Rhys Vaughan was intoxicating, the heady culmination of her new husband’s driving hunger and her own awakened sensuality. When he mysteriously disappeared the next morning, she waited for him in hope and desperation. And when he was finally proclaimed dead in a shipwreck, she bitterly mourned the loss of her love.

The second wedding night that Juliana spent with Rhys Vaughan was six years later, after he returned to claim her just as she was about to wed another. This Rhys was different—bolder, harder, and convinced that she’d betrayed him. Only their blazing passion remains from their years apart. But is it enough to light their way through the maze of mystery, menace, and mistrust—to the love they once shared and would have to find again?

Ahhh, the folly of young love.  Rhys and Juliana meet as young and impressionable lovers.  Rhys is a passionate Welshman who is fighting for his countrymen.  Juliana is young and swept away by passion and love.  They elope in order to be together, but they are separated soon after the wedding night.  You know it’s never going to go well with a hasty elopement!

This is a complex story of deceit and manipulations.  It’s a classic historical romance novel with all the key elements that make them sweeping sagas.

After six years, Juliana is made to face the decisions of her past.  Rhys is back and putting a stop to her engagement to an English Lord.  He doesn’t believe that she didn’t have a hand in having him impressed into the Navy in order to get out of their hasty marriage.

It becomes a cat and mouse game for Rhys.  Can he ever find the truth about who ruined his life?  Can he believe anything that Juliana says?  Why is he lusting after his wife’s body and mind when she ruined him?

Life for Juliana is difficult.  She is no longer mistress of her home and she is tired of Rhys not believing her.  If there is to be a future between the two, he needs to believe in her.

This book does not disappoint – it is the quintessential historical romance novel.  There is political strife with the clash between the Welsh and English, deceit and betrayal and lust.  I found it compelling it read and was engaged in the reconciliation between the two.

Angel in Scarlet

Angel in Scarlet (A Bound and Determined Novel) by Lavinia Kent

Angel in Scarlet

Overview by Publisher:

After her dreams of wedding bells are dashed by a man she thought had serious intentions, Miss Angela Ripon must be satisfied. She plans to make him burn for her, and then to reject him as he rejected her. There’s only one woman who can teach Angela that sort of seduction: Madame Rouge—or Ruby, to the men who frequent her house of pleasure. The infamous madam agrees to help, but only after warning Angela that her target has very specific tastes. To trap her prey, she must shed every last inhibition.

Matthew Harkness, Earl of Colton, doesn’t mean to hurt the young admirers who flock to him. He simply isn’t interested in women who are too timid for his dark desires. He judged Angela to be like the others—tender, sweet, and innocent. So how to explain the change that has come over her? Matthew aches to teach Angela all he knows of earthly pleasures. But even as she offers the control he craves, perhaps this angelic beauty has a lesson or two to teach him.

Wow!  This book is definitely steamy!  Beware of a scorned debutante!

Backstory – Matthew (Colton) is in the market for a bride.  He gets to know Angela and finds her to be what he is looking for…until things change and she is just like every other young woman out there.  The spark he saw in her is gone.  He ends things and she is wounded.

Angela wants to give Colton a taste of his own medicine.  She wants to lure him in sexually and then toss him aside when she gets him to want her.  She requires help, so she goes to a Madam to learn more about men and how to entice them.  I really enjoyed the scenes at the brothel as the Madam taught Angela how to be a woman and own her own desire.

Colton is hard to like at first.  He is shockingly rude and blunt to Angela.  Even saying things like, why don’t you get the point and I am not interested in you anymore.  It takes a strong woman to keep trying in the face of brutal honesty.  Colton’s sexual exploits and interests are really well established.  Other historical romance novels usually hint at a man’s past and how wild he was, but this book explores his desires.

There is a lot of sexual chemistry between these two.  Colton doesn’t trust Angela’s motives, so he pushes her to the point of humiliation.  Repeatedly.  At times, I wondered why on earth Angela would put herself through this for Colton.  I knew that she wanted to teach him a lesson, but she admits there are unresolved feelings there and if she is successful, she may want to keep him.

This is a highly sexual historical romance book.  The erotic escapades Colton and Angela engage in are considered risqué now, let alone in the 1800s.  If you are looking for a story that will titillate and excite your imagination, then this is the book for you!

Deceived

Deceived (A Dark Alliance Novel) by Kate Serine

deceived

Overview by Publisher:

Luke Rogan’s assignment is simple: secure young Elijah Scoffield and his mother and bring them back to headquarters–just an ordinary mission for an operative of the Dark Alliance. But Elijah is no ordinary kid. He’s the grandson of one of the country’s most influential politicians–a man privy to the Alliance’s most valuable secrets, including its centuries-long connection to the Knights Templar. And someone else is attempting to capture the boy–someone who’s proven he doesn’t give a damn about collateral damage. . .

Heartbroken at the lies that tore her world apart, Sarah Scoffield will do anything to protect her son–even if that means teaming up with a deadly stranger. But Sarah soon finds herself falling in love with her dark hero. And as danger stalks ever closer, the fiery desire that claims them awakens in Sarah passions she’d thought dead and buried long ago. . .

I found this book to be so interesting!  Luke works for the Dark Alliance, a group of men descendent from the Templars.  They are involved in some of the highest levels of intelligence and governments in the world.  They work for good, but worry about the resurrection of the Illuminati, their enemy.

This story moves at a face pace.  It reminded me of reading an action movie script.  The dangerous plots are numerous and intertwined making every scene important and relevant to the story.  Luke is sent to collect Elijah and Sarah and to protect them while they figure out who wanted to kill her father.  Elijah is only a boy, but he holds the secrets to the Dark Alliance and must be protected at all costs.

This story takes the best elements from a show like 24 – secret government agencies, high tech spy ware and ruthless spies – and blends it into a romance.  Luke and Sarah are attracted to each other before the fists start flying and the gun fights ensue.  As a widow, Sarah is amazed that she is finally feeling attraction for another man and is cautious thanks to the difficult time her life has undergone recently.

I found the plot just as exciting as the romance.  Luke is a complex character.  He’s an elite agent, a skilled and ruthless fighter, but also highly intelligent.  He’s closed off and struggles greatly with his attraction to his ‘guest’.  However, once they throw caution to the wind, things get interesting between the two.  Luke is just as good in the bedroom as he is in intelligence.  The vivid and lush love making between the two just adds another amazing layer to this complex and intriguing story.

It’s always great to read a contemporary romance novel that is unique and different.  The plot is executed really well and the author has a strong control over the action.  This is a great book!

Wicked Ride

Wicked Ride (The Wicked Horse Series) by Sawyer Bennett

wicked ride

Overview by Publisher:

I think this woman may be the death of me. A dire prediction, but probably true.
Probably true because she’s not mine to have and I’ll probably take her, even at the risk to my own safety. So many men slobbering to get a taste of her and only one, sweet, virginal girl to go around.
That’s right.
She’s a virgin.
Looking like a porcelain china doll that would break if not handled carefully. But I also know she’s stronger than she looks.
She’s a contradiction.
She’s most likely my downfall.
Like I said, she’ll probably be the death of me, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take.

I LOVE this series!  Once I picked up this book, I realized that I missed reading the third book in the series, so I read that as soon as I finished this one…and then I had to go back and read book one and two!  That’s how good this series is!

The Wicked Horse is a bar in Wyoming, but it’s at the back of the property where the real action takes place.  The Silo is a sex club that all the men in the series frequent.  Sexy, dirty, kinky things happen at The Silo and honestly some of the hottest scenes I have ever read.  This series is VERY different than Sawyer Bennett’s other books.  This is definitely erotica – but with a kick ass story!

This is Logan’s story.  While he has been perfectly happy with his life in Wyoming and his time at The Silo, the young woman who is about to be auctioned off has him on edge.  They have a connection that begs to be explored.  He just has to find a way to get close to her, especially since he can’t afford the price that will be demanded at the auction.

Auralie hates that she has to parade naked around a sex club and whip the men into a frenzy.  She is being forced to do this in order to save her father’s life.  She didn’t expect to find an ally in Logan, but she is drawn into his stare and foolishly hopes he can save her.

When her tormentor leaves town for a few days, Auralie and Logan get one on one time together.  They get to know each other and find that they click more than just in the bedroom.  But let’s talk about the bedroom.  Logan can’t have sex with Auralie because her virginity is being auctioned, so it takes foreplay to a new and unbelievable level.  This series and book are just so hot that this book should be read in the privacy of your home – seriously!

What works so well is that there is a relationship between the characters that is not just sex.  Auralie has some serious issues in her life and Logan steps up to help her. There is not just plot strung together between sex scenes, which makes it such a great read.  I couldn’t wait to see where things headed next.  Sawyer Bennett is so skilled at creating thrilling original and unique storylines.

If you like your contemporary novels with some hot Wyoming men with a side of great plot and awesome sex, then you need to check out this series!
