MacLean’s Passion (A Highland Pride Novel) by Sharon Cullen
Overview by Publisher:
Colin MacLean has always felt like a black sheep—especially after his brothers are slain before his eyes in the Battle of Culloden. A smuggler by trade, Colin makes for an embarrassing chieftain. He can’t even save his friends from their British pursuers without getting himself captured. But before he is martyred by the hangman’s noose, Colin escapes with his cellmate, a brave lad he’s come to admire. It’s only in the depths of the Highlands that Colin discovers the lad is a lass—and a bonnie one at that.
Raised by her older brothers, Maggie Sinclair can drink a pint in no time flat and wield a dagger with the best of ’em. Still, men have always excluded her and women have always shunned her. Colin makes her feel different. His wild spirit and rugged good looks have Maggie reconsidering her less than ladylike ways. For the first time, she’s tempted to put on a gown, just to see how Colin would react. She can only imagine what might happen next: a kiss . . . a touch . . . and perhaps enough sultry heat to melt a cold Highland night.
When a man is down and out, it can be the end or the start of something great. Colin is less than a day away from hanging in an English prison, but he manages to escape and take his cell mate with him. It is not until he has recovered from his wounds that he realizes that the lad, is actually a lass!
Maggie is not the average lady of the manor. She wears breeches, fights in the lists and can swear up a storm. After slipping away to fight at Culloden, she was imprisoned. Luckily, she passed as a boy and was unmolested by the soldiers.
Now that she is on the run with Colin, things are confusing. She wants to be the woman she has always been, but there is a part of her that really enjoys the new found feelings she has. Attraction and lust have never had a place in her life, but Colin changes all that.
Colin doesn’t have much to offer Maggie. He is a wanted man and his lands are under English control. If you have been watching Outlander, the time period after Culloden is not hard to imagine. Brutal English control over the Highlands makes life dangerous and difficult. Tomorrow isn’t certain and life hangs in the balance. The tension runs high throughout the story and it’s one difficult journey after another.
Colin is one of those characters who has a lust for life. He is a smuggler and a natural risk taker. He does not want to take risks with Maggie, however. It’s the interesting study of when a man accepts responsibility for things larger than his own world. He now has a clan to care for and a hoyden of a woman.
I enjoyed Maggie’s story. She struggles to be herself when everyone around her is telling her to change. I appreciated that Colin was the only one who saw her value and appreciated her skills. While she may never darn his socks, she will have his back. Colin brings Maggie’s feminity and her desires to the forefront and she blossoms under his care.
You really can’t go wrong with a Highland romance novel. Sweeping vistas, hot men in kilts and tense politics make for a great story!
