Overview by Publisher:

She is his greatest enemy and his only salvation.

Malcolm MacDonald, a lawyer in Edinburgh, unexpectedly inherits his father’s title of Laird of Dunbronach, forcing him to return to a place he hasn’t seen since he was a small child. To gain the trust of a wary clan, Malcolm must act upon their insistence that he cast aside his English betrothed and marry a Highlander.

However, they have one condition—no lasses of the barbaric clan MacLeod.

When he finds an unconscious woman in the sea, he brings her back to his clan but not before doing the one thing that could save her life—hiding her all too telling MacLeod plaid. When she wakes with no memory of who she is, Malcolm vows to keep the little he knows about her identity a secret. As new dangers threaten his clan, the mysterious lass teaches Malcolm some very important lessons about how to be a Highlander and a laird.

But secrets never stay secret for long, and when she finds her plaid, her memory returns and she flees. Malcolm is forced to make a difficult choice to win her back, facing his darkest fears and his worst enemy for a chance at true love.

This story gives equal time to the hero and the heroine.  Malcolm’s life is turned upside down by the death of his estranged father, the Laird of the MacDonald clan.  He must leave his life as a lawyer and lowlander and return to the Highlands to fulfill his father’s wishes.

Malcolm is the ultimate outlander. He doesn’t understand the superstitions and culture of the clan.  He vacillates between the clan is backward and unrealistic to understanding the mystic roots the Scots believe in.  He also has civil war on his hands.  The clan elders are unsure that he can fulfill the role of Laird.  He doesn’t wear a kilt, swing a broadsword or know their history.  Malcolm has to decide what he wants and what is best for a clan struggling to rebuild after an illness wept through and decimated their numbers.

One thing Malcolm doesn’t understand is the Highland feuds.  His clan is mortal enemies with the MacLeods.  There is no Highland hospitality between the two clans – just instant war and death.   So when Malcolm finds a woman washed on the beach, wrapped in a MacLeod tartan, he doesn’t think to help her.  Only later, he worries about harbouring the ‘enemy’ from his clan, but for the reason he doesn’t know what they will do with the sick young woman.

Ronat, the woman Malcolm found, has lost her memory.  She has no idea who she is or what happened to her.  While frightened, she finds sanctuary and peace with the surviving MacDonald’s.  When the situation for the MacDonald’s takes a turn, she must pretend to be Malcolm’s wife.  She assists him in learning the Highland ways and supports him.  They start to build a relationship.  Ronat still doesn’t remember who she is, therefore her inhibitions are loosened.  She wants Malcolm.  She doesn’t know if there is a husband or children waiting for her to come home, but she just knows that she needs and longs for Malcolm’s touch.  It’s the ultimate forbidden fruit for Malcolm – she may belong to another man, but she definitely belongs to the enemy clan.

This story is perfect for those who love historical romance books that feature Scotland.  It’s actually perfect for Outlander fans as the superstitions and clan feuds are front and present in the story.  I adored the evolution of Malcolm, from lawyer to Highland Laird.  Ronat was such a great element to the book.  She brings the mysticism to the reader.  Scotland is a place where magical events seem possible.  Clan politics are front and centre and lead to some very dramatic and tense moments.

If you are a fan of Scottish based historical romance novels, you need to read this book!  It’s the quintessential adventure featuring romance, clans and superstitions.

Highlander’s Castle

Highlander’s Castle by Joanne Wadsworth

Overview by Amazon:

Traveling through time…for a Highlander.

Anne MacLeod’s identical ancestor has made a wish on the Fairy Flag at Dunvegan Castle, one which sees the two young women swapping places in time and leaving Anne set to handfast with the very man her ancestor wished to escape. Only Anne sees the possibilities, because now she could change the future and ensure her parents never perished in the inferno which took their lives.

Highland warrior Alex MacDonald has made an agreement to handfast with Anne in order to bring a halt to the feud raging between their clans. The last thing he expects though is a woman claiming to come from the future, a woman who stirs him on a physical and emotional level to protect, and to even believe.

When Anne finds herself in her MacLeod chief’s presence, she chooses to go with him in order to leave a message for her parents. In full pursuit, Alex wages a battle of the heart, and of the very essence of time. Can he defy the odds as Anne is taken from him…to work his own magic and get her back?

I really love the time travelling genre!  I found this book through Book Bub. If you haven’t signed up, I highly recommend it!  They send you a list of books daily that are either free or only a few dollars.  This book is currently free and it’s great!

Anne is travelling in Scotland.  She has no family left but has headed to Scotland to explore the history of her family.  She is a MacLeod, but is exploring a MacDonald keep when she is suddenly sucked back in time.  So begins the awesome adventure!

What makes this story unique is that Anne goes between the past and the present as her time travel is linked to her ancestor’s wish upon the MacLeod Fairy Flag.  It’s like a woven tapestry of history and modern day.

Anne finds out that she is to be married when she arrives in the past.  She handfasts with a handsome Highlander, Alex.  She can’t hide the fact that she is very attracted to the handsome man.  So begins the relationship between the two.  Alex has agreed to marry the MacLeod niece as part of a peace pact.  Lust quickly blooms between the two and the reasons for the union fade as their admiration for each other grows.  Of course there are complications – which are amazing!

What I really enjoyed about this book was how the past and the present intersect.  Anne and her ancestor, Annie meet.  Anne is able to change the tragedies of the past and influence the future. This story is really original and different.  Due to Anne’s precarious position in the past and how she can’t control her time travelling, it creates a sense of urgency in the story that made me sit on the edge of my seat!

The characters are amazing – I loved them!  From Alex’s mother to the great Rory MacLeod, historical figures are interspersed with fictional characters to flesh out the cast.  I really enjoyed this story and the characters!  This is definitely a book to get now and read as soon as you can!

Eternal Hunger

Eternal Hunger by Ainsley Evans

Overview by Publisher:

A desire that won’t be denied…

London, 1860. It’s the night of the Masked Ball, one of the most elegant events among London society and a chance for Emily Adams to pretend she’s someone else. Someone who isn’t penniless and hailing from a scandalized family. Someone who hasn’t been told by doctors she has less than a year to live. Behind the mask, Emily can put painful recollections aside and focus on her mission: to find a man to give her a first kiss.

A hunger that can’t be tamed . . .

Malcolm MacRoyce is on a different kind of hunt, one he knows all too well. A ball among English aristocracy is the last place the immortal Highlander would expect to find himself, but tonight he’s in pursuit of one of his kind who’s been terrorizing London—leaving a trail of bloody murders in his wake. Since Malcolm was cursed centuries ago, he has lived by a strict code and has sworn vengeance on those responsible for his transformation, a vengeance that has gone unsatisfied —until he meets what he has waited centuries for: the reincarnation of the woman he’d once loved…the same woman who damned him.

After a chance meeting in a shadowy garden, Emily can’t deny the attraction between her and the mysterious Scotsman. But can she trust this stranger who looks at her as if he knows her very soul? Or shake the sense that Fate is playing a game with them both.

Some desires last a lifetime—this one is eternal.

Halloween is tomorrow and this is the perfect book to curl up with after all the little trick or treaters are done for the night!

Malcolm is a vampire and has lived for five hundred years.  His past haunts him and life has a certain ennui about it.  He doesn’t take the lives of humans, but rather heals the sick by drinking their weak and diseased blood.

Malcolm is a great character.  He has a really interesting past that has shaped the man he is now.  He has the qualities we love in a Scotsman in a historical romance novel, along with the supernatural elements that make him unique.  I found him to be a great character full of conflict and self doubt.

Emily is dying.  She has consumption and is wanting to experience a few things before her time is up.  She has longed to have a kiss.  Such a simple wish that turns very complicated once she meets Malcolm in a garden at a London ball.  Emily is well aware that her odd eyes make her stand out, but mostly in a negative way.  However, Malcolm sees the eyes of his long deceased wife in her sky blue and caramel eyes.  Malcolm pursues Emily much to her delight and to her concern.  Malcolm kidnaps her and takes her to his ancestral home in Scotland.  His intention is to settle a score using Emily, but soon his reasons become blurred.

The book features tragedy, hope, love and revenge.  It hits all the big themes that make a story worthwhile to read.  What is so original is the element of vampires.  It adds a depth to the story and the motivations of the characters.  I found myself engaged by the love story just as much as the vampire plot.

Malcolm and Emily are star crossed lovers who are fighting for that second chance in life.  A story not to be missed!

Overview by Publisher:

Penny Kline didn’t come to Honduras on a pleasure trip. She’s here to rescue her kidnapped niece, the only family she’s got left. What she didn’t plan on was walking into a covert ops mission—or being wrapped up in the hard-muscled arms of Rafe Ortega. The cool-as-ice operative’s touch may get her all hot and bothered, but no man can have a hold on her heart until her niece is home where she belongs.

Even in the tropics, Alpha Security operative Rafe can take down the bad guys without breaking a sweat. Hostage extractions. Clandestine missions. Those are the things he’s been trained to handle. Relationships? Not so much. But one look at this strong, sexy redhead and he’s seized by a fierce urge to protect her at all costs. Now Penny and Rafe will have to up their game because they’re about to go into a master criminal’s lair without backup, and the danger—and passion—is about to explode . . .

I started reading this book when I went to bed last night and the next thing I knew, it was three in the morning and I had finished it!  That is a clear sign that I enjoyed it and it was captivating!

The story involves Penny and Rafe.  Penny is down in Honduras searching for her missing cousin.  She stumbles into a group of operatives, including her male cousin who she hasn’t heard from in years.  It turns out they are looking for the same drug lord who has her cousin captive.  Rafe is part of the team that has been hunting him for months.  Penny wants to be part of their team and thinks her training as a bounty hunter has prepared her for the role.

Rafe is immediately attracted to Penny.  He battles the attraction due to the fact that Trey, her cousin, would kill him as well as the fact that he just doesn’t do relationships. With the attraction barely contained, they are heading to go undercover and posing as lovers.

The action is just as hot as the sex scenes in the book.  Penny and Rafe set the pages on fire with their scorching passion.  The dangerous jungle lair of the drug lord creates tension and anxious situations.  It really heightened the plot and moved the relationship along between the two.

I found this to be an exciting book to read.  While I was reading, I found myself enjoying the development of the characters.  There was enough twists and turns that it kept me guessing what would happen next!  A hot love story with tons of danger!

Lady Lost

Lady Lost by Jane Goodger

Overview by Publisher:

All Marcus Granton wants is to be left alone to lick his wounds after the humiliating scandal of his wife’s death in another man’s bed. Secluded in his moldering seaside estate on the cliffs of the Black Sea, he suddenly finds himself host to Lady Lilian Martin, one small child, and an annoying cache of servants all bent on ruining his solitude. Seems the lady got herself into a bit of a pickle and is accused of murder, of all things. Now she must rely on him for protection—and to keep his thoughts and hands away from her delectable body.

Lilian has no intention of spending any more time with the insufferable Lord Marcus Granton than she has to. But at every turn, circumstances force her into his company, and by the time she truly makes her escape, it’s far too late for her…and her heart.

I recently discovered the British show Poldark.  It’s a great show and definitely helps with droughtlander!  The lead, Poldark and his lovely wife, Demelza are as wild as the Cornish coast they inhabit.  While reading this book, I couldn’t help but imagine the scenery and the characters in Poldark.

poldark1

This story features a brooding and unhappy Lord who is rusticating in his worn down estate on the coast.  Marcus has suffered betrayal and is licking his wounds.  He is not ready to rejoin the lavish society he has turned away from – including his family.

His solitude is interrupted by a woman who faints in front of his carriage.  He brings Lillian to his home to recuperate and it turns into a life changing event.

Lillian is running away from an investigation into her brother-in-law’s murder.  The story starts before these events and lets us in on the sad tale of Lillian’s past.  As a young woman, she was forced to enter the marriage mart to find a husband to take care of her and her sister.  With her mother nearing death, Lillian reluctantly accepts the attentions of the Duke of Weston.  The lecherous man then turns his attentions to her much younger sister, whom he marries.  Lillian spent three years in their home, dodging his unwanted advances and the temper of her sister who rails at the injustices of her life.  When Lillian comes across the Duke murdered, she is mistakenly labelled as the killer by her sister.  She flees and is found by Marcus.

The story revolves around the relationship between Lillian and Marcus.  Unexpected guests arrive at the spooky old estate that challenge the couple and yet bring them together.  Marcus doesn’t want to be attracted to Lillian and doesn’t want to be around her.  Lillian has no where to go.  She is wanted by the authorities and disgraced by society.  The story really delves into Marcus’ grief and emotions.  He is the dark to the lightness that Lillian brings to the story.

I found this book to be really engaging.  It was different from a lot of historical romance novels due to the setting, plot and characters.  The sweeping coast was like a character unto itself.  It plays a large role in the adventures the characters have and adds an element of danger.  The plot line is unique in that there is a reality woven throughout, from the late duke’s sexual predilections to the murder investigation to the sexual relationship between the two.  The characters are enjoyable to read about, and we get to know their deepest feelings and thoughts.

A great story!  Make sure to check it out!

The Billionaire Next Door

The Billionaire Next Door by Jessica Lemmon

the-billionaire-next-door

Overview by Publisher:

It’s Tag Crane’s job to be the life of the party. Traveling from one exotic locale to another is just part of running the luxurious Crane Hotel empire. But even paradise isn’t perfect. Devising a new business strategy is keeping Tag up at night-and so is the Great Dane barking at all hours in the apartment below his. To muzzle the problem, Tag charges downstairs . . . right into the most beautiful, blond distraction he’s ever seen.

Dog-sitting by day, bartending by night. It’s not exactly the life Rachel Foster dreamed of. But when Tag Crane rushes in, all mountain-man shoulders and obscenely sexy smile, needing her help for the Crane Hotels, it’s a fantasy come true. What’s the harm in a fun no-strings fling? Only a fool would give her heart to a billionaire player like Tag-until suddenly the one man who can’t be caught is the one flirting with forever . . .

The minute I started reading this book, I was immediately connecting the lead character, Tag with the internet sensation-turned actor, Brock O’Hurn.  I greatly enjoy following Brock on Instagram.  He comes across as a genuinely nice guy who is leveraging his fantastic looks into an acting career.  He is currently starring in Tyler Perry’s Too Close To Home tv show, so every week I can watch him in action, whether he is riding a motorcycle or kissing a cute lady or helping an elderly man.  This guy has it going on and reading this book was like fan fiction of Brock O’Hurn.

brock-ohurn

Tag is described as 6’6, with long, flowing hair and a close cropped beard.  Hello Brock!  While the latter is just starting to make his mark, the character Tag is a billionaire and part of the established hotel dynasty Crane.  He is in charge of guest services for the hotels and travels the world constantly.  This suits his lifestyle, including his love ’em and leave ’em approach to the ladies.

While it would appear that I find Tag to be the star of the book, it was actually Rachel who was the most interesting.  Rachel has a lot of baggage.  Tag meets her when she is starting to rebuild her life after a betrayal that shook her to her core.  Her spirit has been crushed and she is struggling to see her worth.

While it would be easy to assume that Tag sweeps in and solves all of Rachel’s problems, the story is a lot more complicated than that.  Rachel is incredibly guarded and almost defeated in life.  She resists putting her life in the hands of another man and I really respected that – although at times I was yelling at her for being able to resist the luscious manliness of Tag/Brock.

Like other Jessica Lemmon books, this one features great sex scenes.  I found it thrilling how the author detailed their encounters and really built up the sexual tension between the two.  While not gratuitous, the scenes have some great chemistry and action to further the plot!

The first book in the series, The Billionaire Bachelor, was a great read and the characters are featured in this book, as well as the other Crane brother Eli. The author has set up the plot for the final book which looks really interesting.  While this is the second book in the series, it can definitely be read as a stand alone, although you will likely want to read the first as well!

Last Ride

Last Ride (Wind Dragons MC Series) by Chantal Fernando

last-ride

Overview by Publisher:

The Wind Dragons MC couple who started it all is back! We met the stars of Chantal Fernando’s bestselling series in Dragon’s Lair, and now Sin and Faye are ready for more—and with these two, that means more passion, more action, and more of the best kind of trouble.

Sin, president of the Wind Dragons Motorcycle Club, doesn’t mind that things have quieted down since he got married—with Faye at his side, he’ll never be bored. Plus, they’ve got their little girl Clover to keep them on their toes. But when new MC brother Talon needs help rooting out a traitor in his old club, Faye’s the first to volunteer. She’s more determined than ever to get involved and put her law degree to good use, but Sin soon finds himself riding to the rescue. Because he’ll kill anybody who touches a hair on Faye’s head—if she doesn’t get to them first. One way or another, tonight’s going to be someone’s last ride….

God, I LOVE this series!  The Wind Dragons have dominated my Kindle lately.  I have recently discovered this series and blew through every book.  Thankfully, Chantal Fernando has been releasing the books pretty quickly, which is much appreciated as the wait between books can be so long sometimes!

This book is not very long – more of a novella in length.  It goes back to the couple that started it all – Faye and Sin.  Their story was fantastic and I highly recommend reading it!

Faye is a bad ass bitch!  She has a wicked sense of humour and loves her family deeply.  Not only is she the wife to the President of a biker club, she is a lawyer and a mom of two little ones.  Faye has seen the dangerous side of the biker lifestyle first hand over the years and has sought to make herself physically stronger to protect what she loves.

The past couple of books in the series feature a mysterious plot of a traitor in the midst of a rival MC.  All the loose ends get tied up in this book.  It’s dangerous, humourous and engaging.  I literally read this book in a couple of hours because I couldn’t put it down!

I have a sad feeling that this is the last book in the series.  Almost all the Wind Dragons are settled down and each guy got a special moment with Faye at the end of the book.  My heart breaks at facing the end of these awesome guys, but I am also excited to see what she comes up with next!

Baron

Baron (Knickerbocker Club) by Joanna Shupe

baron

Overview by Publisher:

New York City’s Gilded Age shines as bright as the power-wielding men of the Knickerbocker Club. And one pragmatic industrialist is about to learn that a man may make his own destiny, but love is a matter of fortune . . .

Born into one of New York’s most respected families, William Sloane is a railroad baron who has all the right friends in all the right places. But no matter how much success he achieves, he always wants more. Having secured his place atop the city’s highest echelons of society, he’s now setting his sights on a political run. Nothing can distract him from his next pursuit—except, perhaps, the enchanting con artist he never saw coming . . .

Ava Jones has eked out a living the only way she knows how. As “Madame Zolikoff,” she hoodwinks gullible audiences into believing she can communicate with the spirit world. But her carefully crafted persona is nearly destroyed when Will Sloane walks into her life—and lays bare her latest scheme. The charlatan is certain she can seduce the handsome millionaire into keeping her secret and using her skills for his campaign—unless he’s the one who’s already put a spell on her . . .

I really love this series!  The author has set this series in New York’s gilded age in the early 1900s.  It’s a totally different time compared to most historical romance novels.  It explores the gilt and glamour of New York, studded with names like Astor and Rockerfeller.

The Knickerbocker club is a group of four men who have complimentary business interests. Together, they work to ensure their agendas – be it political or business related – are successful.  Two of the men have been featured in previous stories, Magnate and Tycoon.

This story features Will Sloan.  His sister, Lizzie was the romance lead in the previous book, so we got to know Will quite well.  He is a true blue blooded New Yorker and businessman.  He has turned his attention from his railroad business to politics and is running on the ticket for the Republicans.  His running mate has been seeing a psychic, Madame Zolikoff for advice.  Will is determined to get rid of this charlatan as the press finding out will damage their political chances.

What Will doesn’t realize is that he will fall head over heels in lust for the lovely Ava Stone.  When bullying and bribery don’t work, Will must use all his persuasion to get Ava to stay away from his running mate.  As the two spend more time together, they learn about each other’s worlds.  It was really interesting reading about Ava’s life in working class New York.  The author must have done extensive research to find out what the average workers life was like at that time.  It was likely much easier to find out what the elite of New York were doing, but the poor working class led a life vastly different.  Seeing the poverty and the desperation through wealthy Will’s eyes was very effective.

The class difference between the two features heavily in the story.  While they may be compatible in many ways, the social class is a gulf that can rarely be breached.  The story explores the challenges the couple faces from within and from society at large.  What is always great about Joanna Shupe books are the passionate and exciting love scenes.  The characters are so well developed and the reader really understands their motivations and thoughts.  So when they come together in the bedroom, the scenes are not only vivid and lush, but they move the plot forward.

At the end of the book, the final Knickerbocker, Cabot, is highlighted with a chapter from his story.  When I finished the end of the first chapter, I was so disappointed not to have more to read!  I am very excited to read his story as it seems the most interesting and spicy!  Can’t wait!

To Love and to Cherish

To Love and to Cherish (The Wedding Belles) by Lauren Layne

to-love-and-cherish

Overview by Publisher:

Alexis Morgan has spent the past eight years devoted to turning her tiny start-up into Manhattan’s premiere wedding planning company, The Wedding Belles. Now that her business is thriving, it’s time to turn towards her much neglected personal life, and Alexis approaches her relationships like she does everything else: with a plan. Not a part of that plan is Logan Harris, the silent partner in the Belles, and the one person who’s been there for her since the very beginning. But Alexis needs someone fun, and Logan’s all business, all the time—except when a late night at the office ends with an unexpected kiss that leaves the usually cool and together Alexis reeling.

Logan has lusted after Alexis since the day he walked into the tiny Harlem apartment that used to double as her office. But the ambitious wedding planner has always been untouchable…until now. Alexis has made it clear that she’s on the dating market—and equally clear that he’s not in the running. But when Alexis finds herself in need of a date for her sister’s last minute wedding in Florida, Logan knows it’s the perfect time to show Alexis that there’s more to him than numbers and spreadsheets—and beneath the pinstripes and glasses lies a hot-blooded heartthrob. As Florida’s sultry days turn into even hotter nights, Logan’s out to convince Alexis that the fling of a lifetime could just maybe turn into forever…

I love Lauren Layne’s writing.  She creates complex characters, witty dialogue and steamy scenes that leave you panting for more.

This is the third book in the Wedding Belle’s series.  I haven’t read the other two books, but that didn’t make a difference as I wasn’t lost trying to figure out the plot.  She weaves in the previous couples seamlessly and effectively.

Logan has been in love with Alexis for eight years.  They are co-owners of her elite wedding planning business and meet regularly to review the finances, but nothing more.  Things come to a head when Logan is forced to make his move.  He is being pressured to return home to London to take over the family business, but his heart is still in New York with Alexis.

Alexis is an interesting character. She has been so badly burned by her past that she has become cold and closed off to the idea of love and a family.  While she helps brides create the perfect wedding, her own love life is non existent.  She can’t see what is in front of her – Logan.

The story revolves around Logan making his move to convince Alexis that love is in front of her.  This has her running scared.  While its a given that there will be a happily ever after ending, the drama to get there is where this book soars.  Logan is a man at the end of his tightly tethered rope.  Alexis is disorientated at the change in her life and relationship with Logan.  Reading about the two of them working together to figure things out was a quintessential Lauren Layne romance.  Another hit for Lauren!

Wicked Highland Wishes

Wicked Highland Wishes (Highlander Vows:  Entangled Hearts Book #2) by Julie Johnstone

wicked-highland-wishes

Overview by Amazon:

Desire tempted them. Honor forbade them. Love ensnared them.

Legendary warrior Lachlan MacLeod has never encountered anything or anyone he could not conquer. But when his younger brother confesses his love for Bridgette MacLean—the only woman Lachlan has ever wanted—Lachlan turns away from the beautiful Scottish lass, vowing to be no more than her friend. Yet his need for Bridgette enslaves him and may well prove to be the one thing he cannot defeat.

Fiercely independent Bridgette longs to be treated as an equal to the men. She always imagined great battles in her future, not great love. Then Lachlan saw her as no one ever had and captured her heart, awakening new cravings inside her without realizing it. But when Lachlan’s younger brother suffers a grave injury while saving her life, she feels unable to deny his plea for her heart. However, it is impossible to give what belongs to another…

Torn between their own desire and their loyalties, Bridgette and Lachlan must find the courage to grasp the passion awaiting them and face the pain their choice will cause. Yet even as they confront their future and love finally seems within their grasp, a fight for the Scottish throne divides the Highland clans and Bridgette becomes a pawn in a political game that threatens to tear her and Lachlan apart forever.

Whew!  This book was epic!  There is so much that happens that I paused to reflect on this book before I wrote the review.

Bridgette is a fierce Highland woman.  She wants to be seen as strong and capable as any man and fights for that right.  As a teenager, she shares a passionate kiss with her brother’s ally and friend Lachlan.  It is the beginning of an epic love between the two.

Time has not been kind to the two.  Bridgette is now being courted by Lachlan’s brother Graham who has made his intentions of marriage explicit.  Lachlan has never paid her attention again, so she resigns herself to a loveless union where she feels she owns Graham as he was wounded defending her.  Bridgette has turned down marriages in the past, one with the despicable Colin Campbell.

There is a lot of political plot that happens in this book. It features Robert the Bruce’s son, King David and his entourage.  I found this really interesting as a great majority of the Highlander books out there feature the sire.

The heart of the book is the relationship between Lachlan and Bridgette.  They must deal with the betrayal of his brother Lachlan, the anger of Colin Campbell and the pretend engagement Lachlan has with Colin’s sister Helena.  There is a complex plot in play here.  While it is never confusing, it felt like these two had more obstacles than Romeo and Juliet.  It made the moments they had together all the more precious and rare.

***Spoilers ahead – stop reading now if you don’t want to know***

I am so glad that I took a day to mull things over in my mind before I wrote the review.  Many historical romance novels feature close calls for the female leads.  They are in situations where they are perilously close to being sexually assaulted.  Not many of them actually go there, but this book did.  While it is not graphic, I was yelling NO in my head.  This isn’t the norm for the happily ever after characters have in historical romance novels.  At first, I was surprised that the author would actually include this in the story.  I kept waiting for Bridgette to be rescued or to bash him over the head, but it happened.

After mulling this over for a day, I have come to the conclusion that this scene and event didn’t detract from the book.  It is a brutal reality and very likely what happened to women at that time (and obviously today).  It was how the rape was dealt with afterwards that was cathartic.  Lachlan was a model for any man who supports the woman he loves in the aftermath.  Nothing was magically ok.  Things were hard for Bridgette and for the couple.  They had to work through it and her pain.

This is a complex and at times brutal romance.  Hearts are torn and emotions run high.  It is a sweeping romance that features many players, but at the heart it is the love between Bridgette and Lachlan.
