The Daring Duke

The Daring Duke (1797 Club Series) by Jess Michaels

Overview by Publisher:

The wild and charismatic Duke of Abernathe is the kind of friend anyone would wish to have. He even formed the 1797 Club, consisting of ten men who would all be dukes. But he has full-throatedly declared he will never marry and no one understands why.

But Miss Emma Liston doesn’t care why. A longtime wallflower with an absentee father who is a scandal waiting to happen, she needs to marry. Now. She decides to take a wild chance and ask the help of her friend Meg’s brother James. She asks him to pretend he’s interested in her just long enough to gain the attention of others. He agrees but is quickly taken aback by how easy everything is with Emma.

When her father returns, threatening her with a terrible future, their courtship swiftly becomes all too real. Will James ever reveal the true man beneath the outer shell? And can Emma discover her own worthiness before it’s too late?

I was SO thrilled to see this book on twitter.  I raced to Netgalley to see if I could get an ARC copy!  And I did!

I really love Jess Michaels writing.  What makes her a safe bet is that her books have all the things you want in a historical romance novel – great plot, interesting characters, very sexy scenes and a happily ever after!

However, that is simplifying the appeal of Jess Michaels.  I have been reading her books for a while now and what I really love is that she writes erotic novels that have amazing storylines and characters.  Unlike some other books in the genres, Jess’ books pull you in with your heart, head and libido.

This is a new series and with the amount of Duke’s in the club, we will have a healthy series of hot men to lust over for some time to come!  The premise is that the boys formed a club of heirs to dukedoms so that they could pool resources and teach each other what they needed to learn in order to be successful.  There is a large number of duke’s coming up at the same time, so the group is large and varied.  Jess Michaels has even created a webpage to explain the series to fans www.1979club.com

This is the first book and it starts with James.  He was the reason the club of dukes began as his father was heavy on the discipline and light on the mentoring.  James grows up to be viewed as the Golden One – engaging, charming and likeable.  But underneath, he is haunted by his childhood traumas.  He vows never to marry.

Of course we know that once he meets our heroine Emma, that will change.  The two strike a bargain to help each other out.  Close proximity has a funny way of changing intentions.  What ensues is a delicious courtship, insane parental figures and exciting romance.  This is Jess Michaels at her finest!

She cleverly sets up the next story to be a love triangle between James’ sister Meg and his two best friends (and fellow Dukes), Simon and Graham.  I can’t wait to see how this series unfolds!

The book goes on sale March 14th, 2017

One Summer of Surrender

One Summer of Surrender (Seasons Series) by Jess Michaels

Overview by Publisher:

Lucien, the Earl of Stenfax has been engaged twice, but only in love once. That was with his childhood sweetheart, Elise. When she threw him over for a man with more money and a higher ranking title, it broke him. Now she’s widowed and he finds himself drawn to her again, like a moth to her flame.

Elise had her reasons for walking away from Lucien, reasons he doesn’t understand. Back in Society, she’s now financially desperate and is even considering becoming someone’s mistress. But Lucien keeps appearing at the most inopportune moments and it’s only a matter of time before the desire between them explodes.

Time will tell if Lucien will be able to see past his lusty drive for revenge. And if Elise can convince him she’s worthy of more, despite the past.

I read this book in one day.  It is not that it’s a short book, but rather it’s so engaging that I couldn’t put it down.

Lucien has made an appearance in the other Seasons books, but this time he gets to face his past.  Years ago, Lucien was set to marry Elise.  He loved her and had for years.  Unexpectedly, she broke off the engagement and married a cold, dastardly duke.  Three years later, she is a widow – and free.

The years haven’t been kind to Elise.  Married to a man she hated, controlled by his heir and desperate.  She sees her only path to freedom as a courtesan.  Her attempts at finding a protector are stymied again and again by the last man she thought she’d see…Lucien.

This story is one of redemption, secrets, love and missed opportunities.  I found this to be a heart wrenching tale.  Elise has done Lucien and his family wrong.  She has never been able to apologize or give her reasons for her betrayal of Lucien’s love.  The past two books have heavily hinted that a reconciliation was in the works for these two, but at times it seems impossible.

While Elise and Lucien can’t stop the physical attraction between them, they don’t bother to try.  This is what I love about Jess Michael’s books.  There is so much passion and lust between her characters.  Hard, fast, slow, lingering, there is a multitude of touch between the two and the lucky recipient is the reader.  This author knows her way around a love scene and isn’t afraid to use sex as a great plot twist.

This is a story of love lost and found.  If you have read the previous books in the series (which I recommend), you will enjoy seeing familiar faces again.  The story ends without a central plotline being resolved, but it sets up the final book in the series!  I highly recommend this book and the series!

A Spring Deception

A Spring Deception by Jess Michaels

a spring deception

Overview by Publisher:

Miss Celia Fitzgilbert’s grandfather has decreed she must marry a man with a title or he’ll never reveal her mysterious father’s identity. But her engagement to an Earl was already broken, leaving her steeped in scandal. She has all but given up until the reclusive Duke of Clairemont returns to Society and sweeps her off her feet, a potential solution to all her problems.

But things are not so simple for the duke. Aiden is not comfortable with his position in Society, perhaps because he is a fraud. In truth, Clairemont died months ago and the man playing him is a spy, bent on uncovering a dangerous secret. A flirtation with Celia, meant to help him fit in, quickly turns very real. But can Celia recover when the lies come out? And can Aiden keep them both alive long enough to even consider a future?

This is the second book in the series from Jess Michaels.  The first book was really enjoyable and I found myself falling for the characters.  Rosalinde and her sister Celia have escaped their evil grandfather’s clutches and are now living on their own with Rosalinde’s husband, Grey.

Celia broke her engagement with Stenfax, Grey’s brother because she was marrying him for the wrong reasons.  She was about to marry the Earl so her grandfather would give her some information about her father and the circumstances of her early life.  Celia is back in society and trying to figure out her life and where to go from here.

She meets the reclusive Duke of Clairemont and sparks fly.  Little does Celia know that the man she is falling for is not whom he seems.

The relationship between the two blossoms quickly and it seems like true love.  However as the reader, we know that Aiden is definitely not what he says he is.  This had me so stressed out!  I really like Celia and I wanted her to find some happiness.  Jess Michaels has done a great job of weaving a romance that is so lovely and yet so fraught with tension.

The Duke is involved in uncovering a traitor to the crown and this plot is really interesting.  It brings danger and intrigue to an already well spun tale.  I loved how the implications were dire and the danger threatened the relationship.

This wouldn’t be a Jess Michaels book without some hot and heavy scenes.  She is so great at writing lush and vivid scenes that make the reader feel like they are experiencing the same emotions as the characters.  This is a great series and I am looking forward to the next one in the series that features Stenfax and his forgotten fiancé from years ago!

An Affair in Winter

An Affair in Winter (Seasons Series) by Jess Michaels

an affair in winter

Overview by Publisher:

Widow Rosalinde Wilde is on her way to her beloved sister’s wedding when an unexpected storm waylays her at an overcrowded inn. There she meets a tempting stranger who sweeps her into a night of unforgettable passion.

Grayson Danford never expected a night with the irresistible Mrs. Wilde, but she was a welcome distraction from the unpleasant duty of breaking up his brother’s impending nuptials. He’s shocked when he discovers his passionate lover is none other than the sister of his brother’s intended.

Now Rosalinde and Gray will butt heads, even as their simmering desire for each other threatens to boil over. Who will win? And who might lose it all?

You know what I love about Jess Michaels?  She writes steamy and hot romance novels.  When I read a review, I want to know that there is some action in the book.  It doesn’t need to be Fifty Shades of Grey level, but I am not into ‘sweet’ romances.  Jess Michaels book are interesting, well written AND erotically charged.

The Regency equivalent of a one night stand opens this sensual novel.  Rosalinde and Gray meet each other in a dingy inn, stranded by a snow storm.  Fate pushed them together and they take advantage of the opportunity.

But things are never that simple.  They find out that they are to be in-laws.  Gray’s brother and Rosalinde’s sister are the most unhappily engaged couple.  Gray was against the marriage before he had even met Celia, the bride-to-be and definitely before he knew that Rosalinde was her sister.  I love tangled situations like these!

The setting of the story also makes it so delicious!  Retiring to a country estate for the nuptials, it’s like a house party where sneaking around makes the illicit affair even more spicy.  Gray isn’t the only one with reservations.  Rosalinde had a horrible first marriage.  She wants her sister to marry for love – not because of expectations or bribery.  Rosalinde’s ruminations on her sister’s future compliment her own situation.  She is a passionate woman who lives life with her heart on her sleeve.  She sees the opportunity for a future with Gray, but the complications bring her down to reality.

Gray is a second son and a successful business man.  He has watched his parents and siblings live with the pain from failed relationships and I really loved how Jess Michaels explores his confusion about what he wants.

Of course, the book has great sensual and sexy moments.  I adore how she crafts excellent characters and emotions, but it’s a real strength how she develops the relationship through sex.  Rosalinde is so sensual and while she is a widow, she comes alive through Gray’s touch.

The story is really well balanced between the emotional responses of impending marriage, family obligations and desires.  It’s another hit for Jess!

Seduced by Jess Michaels

Overview by Publisher:

Criminal Jack Blackwood has plenty of problems, from his complicated relationship with his brother to the plethora of men coming to dethrone him as king of the underground. What he doesn’t need is a rich, bored gentleman showing up to try to join his gang. Worse, he doesn’t need that gentleman’s sister, Lady Letitia Seagate, chasing after him demanding he keep her brother safe. If only the lady weren’t so damned intriguing.

Widowed Letty is desperate to protect her younger brother, even if it means matching wits with the notorious, charismatic Captain Jack. Only the man has far more to him than she ever expected, and his tempting kisses and smoldering promises leave her wanting more than she has ever dared before. Can Jack uncover the truth behind Letty’s darkest lies? And will they both survive the storm about to strike at the very heart of their passion?

Jess Michaels writes great historical romance stories.  What sets her apart from her peers is that you know when you pick up her books that you are going to be swept away by a very, very sexy story.  Not quite erotica, the bedroom scenes explode with passionate embraces that are highlighted by the emotional connection to the character’s stories.

Not only do you get a sexy romp, it gets better because of the excellent story that Jess Michaels weaves.  You care about the characters, it’s not just great sex.  As the reader you become emotionally invested in the story and the well being of the characters.  This book features characters from previous stories.  I always like when intriguing secondary characters get their own book.

Jack is brother to War, who just married into the Woodsley family.  Letty is the cousin to the family and in the last book she was tricked by the evil Jonathan Ashton.

Jack notices Letty at the wedding and the two definitely have sparks flying.  Jack is a criminal warlord and not at all suitable for the Lady Seagate, even though she is widowed.  They share common friends and run into each other enough that the unexplored passion between the two is evident.  The reader is left to anxiously wonder how and when they will act upon it!

Turns out that Letty has a pretty interesting secret that she has to keep.  No other man but Jack can help her with her problem AND keep her secret.  This is the beginning of a sexy and heated romance.  Jack is an amazing lover and Letty is on the ride of her life.  She has been so sheltered in many ways, yet knows harsh realities.  Her relationship with Jack is equal parts physical and emotional as she is able to tell him the truth of her life.  This is where Jess Michaels shows what a great author she is – she weaves emotional connection with striking physical attraction.

There is more plot to this story than Jack and Letty’s relationship.  Jack runs a criminal enterprise that requires a lot of attention and focus.  The dangerous side of London shadows the salons and parlours of the Woodsley family which makes for a great adventure to go along with the romance.

You can’t go wrong with a Jess Michaels book and this is another great addition to her historical romance books!

Ruined (The Wicked Woodleys Series) by Jess Michaels

Overview by Publisher:

When Claire found out a devastating secret about her family, the famous Woodley clan, she ran straight into the arms of a criminal and disappeared for years. But now she’s desperate to escape his clutches and get back what he’s stolen from her: her child. She turns to longtime family horse master Warrick Blackwood, knowing his secrets can get her close to her target.

War doesn’t want to return to the dangerous life he left behind, even to help Claire, but he has no choice. Not only does she know the truth about his past, but he’s never been able to resist her. Her frantic attempt to save her daughter will bring them close, revealing both War’s dominant nature and his heart, but it may also destroy any hope at the future both secretly long for.

I have read quite a few Jess Michaels books now and I have to commend her.  Every book I read is consistently great and I appreciate that when I pick up one of her stories, I know that I will get great characters, sexy scenes and an intriguing plot.

This story is no exception.  I recently read the previous book in the series and the character Claire’s disappearance is alluded to.  I was really intrigued and couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book.  Claire has disappeared from her family’s lives for the past couple of years.  She ran off with the blackguard Jonathan Ashton.

The only person she trusts to help her is Warrick.  He has served the Woodley family for years as their horse master.  He is also the man that Claire has always wanted.  When she turns to him for help, it ignites a passion long denied between the two.  I loved that Warrick was strong, taciturn and capable.  He could stand up to Claire, her family and the criminals that wanted to harm her.

The relationship between the two is developed as they race across England in order to save Claire’s daughter.  War offers his assistance, but forces Claire to face her past mistakes.  I really liked that about the relationship between the two.  It wasn’t an easy reconciliation for the two, it made things complicated.  As readers, we know that complicated makes for a wonderful story.  The chemistry between the two is so thick you could cut it with a knife.  I love that Jess Michaels isn’t afraid to follow her characters into the bedroom and share the steamy details.  It definitely enhances the intimacy of the characters.

There is no shortage of emotions in this book. Claire must face her family and reveal big secrets.  If you are a fan of the Woodley series, all siblings are present.  I felt a lump in my throat when Claire finally approaches her family. The unknown of acceptance or denial was so harsh – it created excellent moments of suspense.

The other suspense in the book comes from the criminals that War and Claire must face in order to get her daughter back.  As always, Jess Michaels wields an excellent criminal in the way of truth and justice.  I found this part of the plot, just as interesting as the romance.

Another great hit by Jess Michaels!

Tempted (The Wicked Woodleys) by Jess Michaels

Overview by Netgalley:

The youngest son of the Woodley clan, Gabriel has been obsessed with bringing his missing twin sister home since she disappeared over two years ago. His drive has forced him to block out all else, including any feelings he may have for the beautiful Juliet Gray. But when she is brought to London by Gabriel’s mother, avoiding the desire she inspires becomes impossible.

Juliet never wanted to come to London in the first place, especially since she knows she won’t be able to avoid Gabriel, who has been both confusing and drawing her from the moment they met. But to give her father a chance at happiness, she’ll stay in town. When Gabriel asks for her help in finding his sister, explosive secrets will be spilled and long suppressed longings will overflow. But will their search bring them love or expose them to a danger that could destroy all they’ve built?

I have read Jess Michaels Flynn Series and really loved it! So when I saw this book, I had to snatch it up! What I like so much about her books is that there is a great story and really hot, steamy scenes. She manages to weave the physical relationship into the emotions of the couple.

So this series has been ongoing, but this is the first book I have read featuring the Woodley family. While reading the previous books would have been great – it was not necessary in order to jump right in and enjoy the book. I had to difficulty following the continuous plot points.

Gabriel and Juliet have met in a previous book. They are attracted to each other, but have never done anything about it until they are thrown together in London. Pretty quickly a physical relationship begins. The friendship and emotional closeness develops as the book progresses. I found it to be a satisfying relationship – they compliment each other well.

Gabriel is the scientific, methodical and emotional closed off member of the family. He has trouble with emotions and if he can deduce something, he doesn’t deal with it. Juliet is not flashy or gregarious, rather, she is considerate, compassionate and constant. This makes her sound kind of boring, but she isn’t at all. She is the steadying force that Gabriel needs in his life.

Gabriel feels terrible guilt about being involved with Juliet when he should be focused on his search for his missing twin. This is the depth that you want in a romance novel. The push and pull of emotions from the characters. While you may disagree with the actions and thoughts of the characters, you find their journey fascinating.

Gabriel was such an interesting and complex man. I loved that he was inexperienced with women and that Juliet could teach the master something. Their physical relationship was really lovely and also very hot.

You can’t go wrong with any book by Jess Michaels. I am thrilled that I have found another series by her to enjoy!

A Marquis for Mary

A Marquis for Mary (The Notorious Flynns Book 5) by Jess Michaels

a marquis for mary

Overview by Amazon:

Mary Quinn is almost at the end of her rope. After two years under her sister and brother-in-law’s protection she may soon have to return to her terrible father’s house if she cannot find a husband. In her desperation, she bumps into Edward, Marquis Woodley. Drawn to each other, they are soon thrown into a scandal that leads to an engagement.

But as the pair grow closer and their wedding looms, Woodley’s past and the horrific circumstances of his first wife’s death may keep them from the happy ending that will save them both.

I’ve got to hand it to Jess Michaels.  She can take a novella and make it totally satisfying.  The pace is quick in this story as the main characters Edward and Mary meet and end up engaged very quickly.  It’s not a problem as it allows the reader to get to the sexy time quickly.

Jess Michaels writes steamy books.  I really liked the characters, so joining them in the bedroom (and the garden) was an enjoyable read.  This book is the fifth in the series and it was great to read about characters that have had full length books.  Mary and Edward have been introduced in previous books, so if you have followed the series than it’s easy to pick up the plot, although this book can be read on it’s own as well.

For a novella, it’s really well developed.  There is scandal, steamy sex and blackmail.  All of this packed into a short book, but in a totally believable way!  I read this book after work tonight lounging in the afternoon sun.  It’s a quick and really enjoyable read.
