The Duke

The Duke (The Victorian Rebels Series) by Kerrigan Byrne

the-duke

Overview by Publisher:

He’s noble. notorious. And takes no prisoners…

Strong as a Viking. Handsome as Adonis. Rich as Midas. Collin “Cole” Talmage, Duke of Trewyth, is the stuff that legends are made of. He’s the English Empire’s golden son–until fate has its way with him. Cole’s family is killed and his closest comrade betrays him on the battlefield, leaving him gravely injured. But Cole is not one to dwell on misfortune. He is a man of duty, honor–and desire. And now he’s ready for the fight of his lifetime…
Imogen Pritchard is a beautiful lass who works in a hospital by day and as a serving maid at night. Years ago, when she was young and penniless, she ended up spending a scandalous night with Cole, whose tormented soul was matched only by his earth-shattering passion. Imogen entered a marriage of convenience—one that left her a wealthy widow—but she never forgot Cole. Now that her long-lost lover has turned up in her hospital, injured and with no memory of her, Imogen is torn: Is it a blessing or a curse that their past remains a secret to Cole, even as his new passion for her leaves him wanting to protect and possess her…at all costs, in The Duke, the next Victorian Rebels novel by Kerrigan Byrne.

I have found it so hard to read lately.  The news is just captivating and horrifying.  It makes me grateful for authors like Kerrigan Byrne.  This series and book have been a welcome distraction to the horrors of what is happening around the world.

What I liked about this book was the evolution of the main characters.  Cole becomes a duke and must adapt to his new life.  Instead he continues to work for the foreign service and is imprisoned in the Ottoman empire and comes home a changed man.  The life he has lived is brutal and yet privileged.  He has one magical night with a prostitute and she becomes his talisman and his reason for living.

Imogen has had a very challenging life.  She had to work off her father’s debt at a whore house as a servant.  She supports her mother and sister working at a hospital.  The weight of responsibility on her shoulders is overwhelming.  Things come to a head and her life changes.  Throughout her evolution, she never forgot the man she spent one night with and never gave up hope for his safety and life.

Cole and Imogen meet throughout the story.  At times,  it was frustrating because Cole didn’t know who Imogen was, but it was also delicious anticipation for when her identity would be revealed to him.  Cole has been searching for ‘Ginny’ for years, believing that she is the only one who will make him happy.  Never did he imagine that he was already acquainted with her.

The relationship between the two is full of sparks.  Cole is abrasive and mean, as he is hurting and damaged.  He battles with Imogen and struggles with his attraction when he is still searching for his Ginny.  The new Imogen is so strong and I loved her strength and values.  She takes on Cole and doesn’t back down from what she believes.  I wish all books I read feature strong women like Imogen.

The romance between the two can be so hot and feral at times it scorched the pages.  Cole and Imogen share a passion that is rewarding to watch unfold.  I found this book to have a level of reality that made it so enjoyable and believable.

The Highlander

The Highlander by Kerrigan Byrne

the highlander

Overview by Publisher:

They call him the Demon Highlander. The fearsome Lieutenant Colonel Liam MacKenzie is known for his superhuman strength, towering presence, and fiery passion in the heat of battle. As Laird to the MacKenzie clan, the undefeated Marquess has vanquished his foes with all the rage and wrath of his barbaric Highland ancestors. But when an English governess arrives to care for his children, the master of war finds himself up against his greatest opponent. . . in the game of love.

Defying all expectations, Miss Philomena is no plain-faced spinster but a ravishing beauty with voluptuous curves and haughty full lips that rattle the Laird to his core. Unintimidated by her master’s raw masculinity and savage ways, the headstrong lass manages to tame not only his wild children but the beast in his soul. With each passing day, Liam grows fonder of Miss Mena—and more suspicious. What secret is she hiding behind those emerald eyes? What darkness brought her to his keep? And how can he conquer this magnificent woman’s heart . . . without surrendering his own, in The Highlander by Kerrigan Byrne.

This book opens with some pretty disturbing content.  Mena has been imprisoned in a mental institute in the 19th century.  It’s a bad as you can imagine.  Kerrigan Byrne starts the book with the main character at her lowest point in her life.  Fighting against sexual assault, terrifying treatments and a bleak future.  Things can only get better right?

Mena escapes and is aided by characters from previous novels.  They help her escape to the Highlands, posing as a governess.  Unbeknownst to her, her friends have sent her to safety and to a man they can count on to keep her safe.

When Mena arrives, it certainly doesn’t feel safe.  The Demon Highlander is fearsome and dangerous.  His reputation is enough to send one packing back to London, but Mena doesn’t have that luxury.

The first meeting between Mena and Liam is pretty memorable.  Kerrigan Byrne writes great scenes that have you laughing and reading as quickly as you can because it’s so engaging.  Mena needs a sanctuary to heal from the wounds of her past and imprisonment, she definitely isn’t looking at Liam the way he is looking at her.

Liam lives in midnight.  His life is dark and dangerous.  He has had a horrid past, full of war, violence and depravity.  He storms around, he blusters and bellows.  Mena is the only one who stands up to him.  He starts to see her as more than the governess and as a desirable woman.  It isn’t a new narrative – the feisty woman who stands up to the damaged alpha male, but it’s effectively written.

Mena harbours a terrible and deep secret.  She is so conflicted as Liam’s interest in her grows and she becomes unable to hide and deny how she feels.  There is one scene where the clan celebrates Samhain and it was so vividly descriptive and engaging.  I loved reading about the pagan celebration and the imagery of the woad designs on Liam’s skin, the roaring fire and the hedonistic dancing.  The author was so adept at drawing the reader into the Highland world.

This book features deep, dark secrets from both Liam and Mena.  I won’t give anything away, but it’s a very complex and well developed story that leaves the reader feeling that you really understand the journey these characters have been on.  Another great book by Kerrigan Byrne!

The Hunter

The Hunter (Victorian Rebels Series) by Kerrigan Byrne

Overview by Amazon:

A scandalous proposal…

Christopher Argent lives in the shadows as the empire’s most elite assassin. Emotion is something he tossed away years ago, making him one of the most clear-eyed, cold-hearted, wealthiest, and therefore untouchable men in London. But when his latest target turns out to be London’s own darling, Millicent LeCour, Christopher’s whole world is turned upside down. Overwhelmed by her stunning combination of seduction and innocence, Christopher cannot complete the mission. She has made him feel again. Now, he will do anything to save her life, even if it means risking his own…

A perilous passion…

When Millie learns what Christopher was hired to do, she is torn between the fear in her heart and the fire in her soul. Putting herself in this notorious hunter’s arms may be her only path to safety–even if doing so could be the deadliest mistake she’s ever made. But how can she resist him? As the heat between her and Christopher burns out of control, danger lurks in the shadows. Is their desire worth the risk? Only the enemy knows what fate has in store…

I have recently discovered Kerrigan Byrne and it has been such a pleasure reading her books.  There is a depth and soul to her characters.  The inner dialogue and torment could be trite and repetitive in the hands of a less skilled author.  Her stories have everything in them that you want – a great story, steamy love and action.

Millie is a consummate actress, the belle of Covent Gardens.  She also has a price on her head and Christopher is the man who is about to collect. The evolution of Christopher is the foundation of this story and it is a great part of the book.  I truly enjoyed reading about how one small woman’s presence turns his world upside down.

We know Christopher intimately by the time he meets Millie. The story opens with a horrid glimpse into his childhood and the terror he was subjected to.  I think this was an extremely clever plot device by the author as it truly helps the reader understand why the emotions Christopher feels are so revolutionary for him.  The fact that he feels anything is remarkable, as the premiere assassin of England, he doesn’t ever feel the pain he inflicts.

There is nothing stronger in this world than the love a mother has for their child.  I would do anything for my son.  I want to fight every battle for him, swaddle him in bubble wrap and keep him with me forever.  Obviously that isn’t going to happen as we want children to be resilient, experience success and failure and to be compassionate.  Millie is that kind of mother.  She loves Jakub with all her heart and the threat against them is real and terrifying.  She makes a deal with Christopher to keep them safe and while Christopher is convinced he is the very devil, Millie gets the protection and the man she is interested in.

From the start the chemistry between Millie and Christopher is electric.  The sparks almost seem to fly off the page.  Whether he is being coarse or rude or cool, Christopher is an enigma to Millie, but one that she wants to get to know.  They are both novices at relationships.  This creates some interesting situations, but as the reader you truly knew that this was a life changing relationship and that it just had to develop into more.

What I admire about Kerrigan Byrne’s writing is how she takes deep and heavy issues and weaves them into the plot so seamlessly.  Abandonment, despair, depravity and love are all explored in this book, yet I never felt like the inclusion strayed from the plot or the development of the characters.  I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more about this world that she has created!

Top Ten Tuesday – Duos

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  Each week there is a new theme to apply to whatever genre of books you like to read.  This week’s theme is great!  If you could get authors to write books together, who would you pair up?

I think this is perfect because one of the series I am reading right now is by two wonderful authors, Amy K Rogers and Ann Marie Walker.  The Chasing Fire series is amazing and the final book will be out very soon!  There are some authors that write together.  VK Sykes is actually husband and wife duo, Vanessa Kelly and Randy Sykes.  I think this is amazing that a husband and wife write together and still stay married!  I can’t even write a grocery list with my husband without an argument.

So here is my dream list of who I would love to see partner up and write awesome romance books!

1.  Lauren Smith and Madeline Martin

Both authors are outstanding and I think they could come up with a great plot and some amazing characters.

2.  Suzanne Enoch and Shana Galen

Both authors write excellent Regency romances with a suspenseful plot.  I can’t even imagine how off the charts a story would be with these two creative minds!

3.  Suzanne Enoch and Samantha Young

Suzanne Enoch created the most amazing character Samantha Jellicoe.  She’s sassy and feisty and oh so much fun!  I desperately want her to write another book with this character.  Samantha Young’s book Hero features a character so much like Sam Jellicoe that it would be awesome for these two to get creative together!

4.  Judith McNaught and Kathleen Woodiwiss

I know that this is never going to happen considering Judith no longer publishes and Kathleen has passed.  But could you imagine what a book written by these two dynamos would be like??

5.  Tamara Gill and Angela Quarles

Both women write excellent time travel novels.  I would love it if they teamed up and wrote a version together!

5.  Lisa Kleypas and Stephanie Laurens

These authors have created some of the very best series I have ever read.  The Cynsters and the Wallflowers were seminal in cementing my everlasting love of historical romances.

6.  Lauren Layne and Janet Nissenson

I have recently discovered both of these authors and their books have made me LOVE contemporary romance.  I want to read everything these authors have written and if they were to write together it would be magic on the page!

7.  Katy Evans and Meredith Wild

Both authors write excellent contemporary romance novels that burn up the pages.  I probably don’t need to elaborate further on this…

8.  Monica McCarty and Kerrigan Byrne

Monica McCarty writes outstanding Scottish historical romance and I recently read Kerrigan Byrne’s Highwayman.  I think the two of them would make a great duo!

9.  Georgia Cates and Nalini Singh

Georgia Cates writes great contemporary romance and her Sin series was fantastic!  Nalini Singh is a very established author and I think they would be an awesome duo as their writing would compliment each other well.

10.  Katherine Bone and Elizabeth Cole

Katherine writes amazing books that feature pirates and Elizabeth creates outstanding mysteries.  Just think of what they could come up with together!

What duos would you like to see?

Top Ten Tuesday – Recommendations

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  The idea is that there is a weekly theme that can be applied to any genre of books you like to read.  The theme this week is a really cool one.  It’s recommending new authors.  So if you liked this one, you’ll love this author…

I think this is a great theme this week.  I often rely on Amazon’s recommendations when looking for an author or a new book to read.  While sometimes they hit the mark, other times the suggestions can be bizarre.  So this week, I will try to cover a range of romance genres and authors I think you will enjoy!

Top Ten Tuesday – Fall TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  Each week features a different them that can be applied to whatever genre of books you like to read.  I find it so fun to makes lists and I like to check out other blogger’s lists as it always seems to add books to my TBR list.

So, this week is fitting then!  The topic this week is the top books for fall that I am waiting/wanting/hoping/dying to read!

Sensational by Janet Nissenson

sensational

This is the final book in the series and I have adored every book I have read by her.  The books aren’t full of perfect characters, but I think that is what draws me in.  If you haven’t read any of her work yet – check her out!

The Striker by Monica McCarty

the striker

I have adored the Highland Guard series since the Chief came out.  The series is winding to a close and I think there are two more books to go.  It’s always hard to finish a series, but the best part is that there is a ton of books to go back and re-read!

Cold Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas

cold hearted rake

It seems like an eternity since the master Lisa Kleypas published a historical romance book.  This book comes out the end of October and I am super excited to read this book!

One King’s Way by Samantha Young

one kings way

It’s a novella that is part of the On Dublin Street series and Samantha has been teasing glimpses of this book on instagram lately.  I am really looking forward to this book as it seems like it has her signature style all over it!

A Gentleman for All Seasons featuring stories by Shana Galen, Vanessa Kelly, Theresa Romain and Kate Noble

a gentleman for all seasons

What is not to love?  Four stories in one!  I love the writing of all these ladies, so I can’t wait!

Some Like It Scot by Suzanne Enoch

some like it scot

I have really enjoyed this series and the brawn Highlanders Suzanne Enoch has brought to life.  The cover of this book would encourage me to get it regardless of who wrote it!  I am excited for Bear’s story and I am sure it will be a scorcher!

The Gilded Chain by Lauren Smith

tje gilded chain

Lauren Smith is a supremely talented author and there is not much that she can’t write about.  Her erotic series has been really enjoyable and the latest one is about to come out!  Can’t wait!

Duke of Scandal by Gaelen Foley

duke of scandal

I really like her work, but for some reason she is not as well known as other authors.  This is a new series she has coming out and I have it pre-ordered already!

Steal Me by Lauren Layne

steal me

I have recently discovered the work of Lauren Layne and loved her work so much that I blew through like 3 series over a weekend.  I actually did an author review, which you can check out here.  This book looks great and features New York City’s finest.  Can’t wait!

The Hunter by Kerrigan Byrne

the hunter

Ok, so I am cheating a little.  This book comes out in February, but I loved her book the Highwayman so much that I am really looking forward to reading another book by her!

The Highwayman

The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne

the highwayman

Overview by Amazon:

They’re rebels, scoundrels, and blackguards-dark, dashing men on the wrong side of the law. But for the women who love them, a hint of danger only makes the heart beat faster, in the stunning debut historical romance The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne.

STEALING BEAUTY

Dorian Blackwell, the Blackheart of Ben More, is a ruthless villain. Scarred and hard-hearted, Dorian is one of Victorian London’s wealthiest, most influential men who will stop at nothing to wreak vengeance on those who’ve wronged him…and will fight to the death to seize what he wants. The lovely, still innocent widow Farah Leigh Mackenzie is no exception-and soon Dorian whisks the beautiful lass away to his sanctuary in the wild Highlands…

COURTING DESIRE

But Farah is no one’s puppet. She possesses a powerful secret-one that threatens her very life. When being held captive by Dorian proves to be the only way to keep Farah safe from those who would see her dead, Dorian makes Farah a scandalous proposition: marry him for protection in exchange for using her secret to help him exact revenge on his enemies. But what the Blackheart of Ben More never could have imagined is that Farah has terms of her own, igniting a tempestuous desire that consumes them both. Could it be that the woman he captured is the only one who can touch the black heart he’d long thought dead?

I loved this book.  It was amazing to read.  The story is so heartbreakingly beautiful and yet so gritty and realistic.  The story starts with the love between two abandoned children.  Even though Farah and Dougan are very young, there is a maturity to the love and devotion they have for each other.  The tragic story of their childhood romance sets the stage for the events seventeen years later.

Dougan Mackenzie saved his Fairy from a horrible fate in the orphanage that they were raised in.  She loved him like no other and has claimed herself to be his widow.  Farah now works at Scotland Yard and has seen her fair share of tragedy over the years.  When the dreaded Dorian of Blackwell is being interrogated it starts a chain of events that she could never have imagined.  Dorian claims to have been brother with Dougan (not real brothers, but best friends).

Farah is kidnapped by Dorian and taken to his Scottish retreat Castle of Ben More.  There she finds out that her love, Dougan, shared his love of her with his young incarcerated mates in Newgate.  Dorian has been searching for Farah, along with the rest of the crew.  The stories Dougan would tell of his Fairy were the only bright spot in the horrid existence that was their lives.  Dorian has taken her to right the wrongs of the past and help her reclaim her birthright as Countess.

Dorian is a supremely well-developed character.  He is so complicated.  Dorian is a stone cold killer and has justly deserved his reputation.  While he burns for Farah, he has huge inferiority complex issues.  He believes that he will demean her with his touch.  He is so full of darkness, yet in Farah’s eyes he’s not beyond redemption.  Farah is the first person that Dorian has shown care for and she makes him so vulnerable.  I felt the temptation that Dorian had pulsing through him.  I recognized the darkness in him and knew that it could only be Farah who could save him.

Farah is a revelation.  I adored her compassion and maturity as a child and as a woman she has such inner strength.  She bargains with Dorian for the one thing she really needs –a family.  Farah uncovers layers of Dorian’s psyche and she deals with each truth and hardship with tact and decisiveness.  I am making her sound like a saint, but she had such strong convictions that came from the scars of her past and her need to mold the future.

Together, Dorian and Farah are combustible.  He can’t deny her anything and she quickly becomes his one weakness.  Dorian keeps his word and restores her all that was lost, but now Farah wants more.  She wants him.  This creates one of the many conflicts and challenges these two faces.  Intimacy is one of the hardest things for Dorian after the horrors of prison.  His struggle to be the man that Farah wants and deserves is a major part of the story.  It is the catalyst for some very hot scenes in the bedroom.

The book is full of descriptions of the seedy underworld of London and the criminals who run it.  The plot is really well conceived and executed.  It reminded me of Lisa Kleypas’ character Nick Gentry, who she has said was one of her very favourite characters.  There is no sugar coating the harsh and despicable things that Dorian has done and I liked that.  He is the leader of a crime syndicate and rules the underworld of London.  Farah, for all her lightness and innocence, has been serving the law for most of her life.  While it would seem like the darkness in Dorian and the lightness in Farah would not be able to survive, they manage to find a way to thrive together.

This is the kind of book that haunts you while you’re reading.  The whimsical nature of fate and the consequences of decisions are major themes.  But the theme I loved the most was that of redemption and reunion.  Dorian and Farah both deserve the happiness that was taken from them in their lives.  I found that this book captivated me and pulled me in as the reader.  While things are not all roses and sunshine and there is no whitewashing of Dorian, the emotions I felt were so satisfying.  Overall, I feel that this book is excellent and highly recommend adding it to your to be read list.
