Love Story

Love Story (Love Unexpectedly) by Lauren Layne

Overview by Publisher:

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

I was so thrilled to find out that a new Lauren Layne book came out!  I have a serious crush on her books.  They all feature sexy and witty dialogue, amazing characters and terrific plot.  The Oxford and Stiletto series are just spine tingling good, so I had expectations for this new book.

She did not disappoint!  This book can be read without reading any of her previous works, but really, if you haven’t read any Lauren Layne you are missing out!  This story features so  many tropes that work really well.  Reunited lovers, first love, enemies to lovers, this story has it all!

The story is told from alternating perspectives, which is something that the author does really well.  I find it hard at times when a male perspective is presented by a female author because it doesn’t always go well.  Never fear!  In this story, Reece’s frustrations, energy and thoughts leap off the page and make the story well rounded.

Reece and Lucy grew up almost as siblings.  Reece, a year older and best friends with her brother, has wanted Lucy for a long time.  Three weeks before she leaves for college, they finally hook up.  Things don’t end well and they both nurture deep seeded grudges that make the two week car trip to California sheer torture.  Once again, the brilliance of the author shines in this story by the method of how she reveals what happened in the past.  Every few chapters, we get a glimpse of Reece and Lucy as children and as teenagers and slowly learn more about what happened for them to go from love to hate.  It is such an effective tool that it kept me hooked the whole time I was reading.

You know a book is good when you start it and don’t put it down until it’s done.  It was so clear that Lucy and Reece were meant for each other.  Their snipes and digs at each other just ratcheted up the ferocious attraction between them.  Both characters have flaws which makes them believable and relatable, but still immensely likable.

Sexy scenes?  Check.  Witty, biting dialogue?  Check.  Great plot?  Check.

Someone Like You

Someone Like You (Oxford and Stilettos Series) by Lauren Layne

Overview by publisher:

Lincoln Mathis doesn’t hide his reputation as Manhattan’s ultimate playboy. In fact, he cultivates it. But behind every flirtatious smile, each provocative quip, there’s a secret that Lincoln’s hiding from even his closest friends—a tragedy from his past that holds his heart quietly captive. Lincoln knows what he wants: someone like Daisy Sinclair, the sassy, off-limits bridesmaid he can’t take his eyes off at his best friend’s wedding. He also knows that she’s everything he can never have.

After a devastating divorce, Daisy doesn’t need anyone to warn her off the charming best man at her sister’s wedding. One look at the breathtakingly hot Lincoln Mathis and she knows that he’s exactly the type of man she should avoid. But when Daisy stumbles upon Lincoln’s secret, she realizes there’s more to the charming playboy than meets the eye. And suddenly Daisy and Lincoln find their lives helplessly entwined in a journey that will either heal their damaged souls . . . or destroy them forever.

Dammit!  This book made me cry!  And it wasn’t even at the end of the story!

This is the long awaited story behind Oxford magazine’s biggest flirt and overall great guy, Lincoln.  He has been the supporting character in the many Oxford and Stiletto books to date.  There was always something to the womanizer with the quick lines and flashing smile.

So know we get his story.  And it’s a whopper!  He meets Daisy, Emma’s twin sister, and things click.  She is the one to pull out his story and help him cope.  Daisy has her own challenges in life.  A Southern debutante, life hasn’t turned out how she expected – divorced, alone and living in a mansion.  Coming to New York City for her twin’s wedding was supposed to be fun, but not life changing.

Daisy and Lincoln have great chemistry.  It’s like when you meet someone and immediately feel safe with them.  Not just physically, but that feeling that you have founded someone who has hurt as much as you have or they are a kindred spirit.  Daisy and Lincoln don’t spend all their time together morose or sulking, but help each other through the tragedies that have left them living not a full life.  It’s heart warming, but also frustrating – which made me love Lauren Layne even more!  There is some great conflict and challenges in the story which is what real life is about.

Lincoln is described as the best looking of the men at Oxford.  He has that irresistable man charm that makes most women weak in the knees.  You know the kind – flirty, caring and sexy.  He’s that guy that you notice for his ridiculous looks, but love because of how much fun he is to be around.  Daisy is the Southern belle who is looking to figure out her way in life.  The action takes a while to come in this book, but the long wait is the best kind of foreplay.

This may just be my favourite Oxford series book.  Lincoln’s story was raw, emotional and such an amazing journey!

To Love and to Cherish

To Love and to Cherish (The Wedding Belles) by Lauren Layne

Overview by Publisher:

Alexis Morgan has spent the past eight years devoted to turning her tiny start-up into Manhattan’s premiere wedding planning company, The Wedding Belles. Now that her business is thriving, it’s time to turn towards her much neglected personal life, and Alexis approaches her relationships like she does everything else: with a plan. Not a part of that plan is Logan Harris, the silent partner in the Belles, and the one person who’s been there for her since the very beginning. But Alexis needs someone fun, and Logan’s all business, all the time—except when a late night at the office ends with an unexpected kiss that leaves the usually cool and together Alexis reeling.

Logan has lusted after Alexis since the day he walked into the tiny Harlem apartment that used to double as her office. But the ambitious wedding planner has always been untouchable…until now. Alexis has made it clear that she’s on the dating market—and equally clear that he’s not in the running. But when Alexis finds herself in need of a date for her sister’s last minute wedding in Florida, Logan knows it’s the perfect time to show Alexis that there’s more to him than numbers and spreadsheets—and beneath the pinstripes and glasses lies a hot-blooded heartthrob. As Florida’s sultry days turn into even hotter nights, Logan’s out to convince Alexis that the fling of a lifetime could just maybe turn into forever…

I love Lauren Layne’s writing.  She creates complex characters, witty dialogue and steamy scenes that leave you panting for more.

This is the third book in the Wedding Belle’s series.  I haven’t read the other two books, but that didn’t make a difference as I wasn’t lost trying to figure out the plot.  She weaves in the previous couples seamlessly and effectively.

Logan has been in love with Alexis for eight years.  They are co-owners of her elite wedding planning business and meet regularly to review the finances, but nothing more.  Things come to a head when Logan is forced to make his move.  He is being pressured to return home to London to take over the family business, but his heart is still in New York with Alexis.

Alexis is an interesting character. She has been so badly burned by her past that she has become cold and closed off to the idea of love and a family.  While she helps brides create the perfect wedding, her own love life is non existent.  She can’t see what is in front of her – Logan.

The story revolves around Logan making his move to convince Alexis that love is in front of her.  This has her running scared.  While its a given that there will be a happily ever after ending, the drama to get there is where this book soars.  Logan is a man at the end of his tightly tethered rope.  Alexis is disorientated at the change in her life and relationship with Logan.  Reading about the two of them working together to figure things out was a quintessential Lauren Layne romance.  Another hit for Lauren!

Good Girl by Lauren Layne

Overview by Publisher

Jenny Dawson moved to Nashville to write music, not get famous. But when her latest record goes double platinum, Jenny’s suddenly one of the town’s biggest stars—and the center of a tabloid scandal connecting her with a pop star she’s barely even met. With paparazzi tracking her every move, Jenny flees to a remote mansion in Louisiana to write her next album. The only hiccup is the unexpected presence of a brooding young caretaker named Noah, whose foul mouth and snap judgments lead to constant bickering—and serious heat.
Noah really should tell Jenny that he’s Preston Noah Maxwell Walcott, the owner of the estate where the feisty country singer has made her spoiled self at home. But the charade gives Noah a much-needed break from his own troubles, and before long, their verbal sparring is indistinguishable from foreplay. But as sizzling nights give way to quiet pillow talk, Noah begins to realize that Jenny’s almost as complicated as he is. To fit into each other’s lives, they’ll need the courage to face their problems together—before the outside world catches up to them.

Lauren Layne has become one of my new favourite authors in the past year.  Like my love for Sawyer Bennett, I know that I am going to get a great story with unique characters and the best part – really sexy scenes.  They don’t always involve getting down and dirty, but have smooth talking characters that are seductive and fascinating.

This is a stand alone book, rather than most of her work which is series.  We meet Jenny, a country star who is looking to lie low from the rather false and negative press she has been getting.  Jenny totally reminded me of Taylor Swift.  I don’t know if that was the muse Lauren Layne had in mind, but it’s what worked for me.

Jenny comes to a rustic farmhouse in Louisiana to hide.  She meets the ‘caretaker’ Noah and settles into find her musical soul again.  But Noah isn’t the contractor, he is two people.  I kind of found this a bit confusing.  Noah is also known as Preston.  Noah is the man who grew up poor in a trailer park.  Preston is the man who reunited with his long lost father as a teenager and has inherited great wealth.  I don’t know why he goes by a different name later in life, but it is the lynchpin of the big misunderstanding.

I’m getting ahead of myself.  Jenny is one of those cheery optimistic people.  Even though she has been slandered in the gossip rags, she is still trusting and sunny.  She doesn’t get off to the best start with Noah, but is determined to get under his skin.  The attraction between the two is palpable.

That is something that Lauren Layne does so well.  She creates fantastic sexual chemistry between characters.  You swear it’s leaping off the page it’s so real!  Noah and Jenny want each other fiercely, but the games they play only work to tease and entice.  I found that I couldn’t put the book down because I was so engaged in their extensive foreplay.  I could just imagine how hot and sweaty Noah was while wearing work gloves and broken in jeans while tearing the deck apart.  The imagery and attention to details make all of Lauren’s stories exceptional.  While she doesn’t draw a picture for you, she gives you enough details to make the visual images in your head drool worthy.

While the story was predictable in the fact that boy and girl finally hook up, break up badly and the big misunderstanding requires big acts for redemption, it was the details that made this story so fun.  I loved hearing about Jenny’s career and the songs she was writing.  I adored the internal struggle Noah had with his past and the possible future.  Like all Lauren Layne books, the secondary characters are wonderful and enhance the plot.

Don’t miss this great contemporary romance – you will never look at zip ties the same way!

I Wish You Were Mine

I Wish You Were Mine (Oxford Series) by Lauren Layne

i wish you were mine

Overview by Netgalley:

A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.

Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

Oh how I love the men of Oxford Magazine!  The whole gang is back, but this time we get to know Jackson a lot better.  He has recently joined the team after his professional NFL career went up in smoke.  Bitter, resentful and standoffish, Jackson is not adjusting well to life and New York City.
Jackson is also just getting out of a horrific divorce.  His ex wife Madison is a true self-centered bitch.  She cheats on him and leaves him when the chips are down.  I loved that Lauren Layne made her a Housewife of the NFL – such a fun tweak!  This book felt a little like reading about  forbidden love – the ex-step sister and the brother-in-law.  I think that added an element of spice to an already hot story.  The chemistry they have is off the charts and the sex scenes are downright addictive to read.

Why should you read this book?  Well, Lauren Layne has chemistry down to a science.  She creates lust and passion between characters that is exciting to read. She doesn’t shy away from making her characters human – meaning that they screw up.  It’s how they deal with it that makes me love her writing.

Lauren Layne has created a wonderful atmosphere of the kind of life in New York City that most of us would give our right arm to have lived in our twenties.  Awesome job, fun group of friends and the most exciting city to explore.  I loved the camaraderie that the group at Oxford has.  This is part of the charm of Lauren’s books.  While each book can be read as a standalone, it is so fun following each of these characters as they get their shot at love.

For those that have been following this series, the author gives a great sneak peek at resident manwhore Lincoln and it looks like his story is next!

Top Ten Tuesday – Best of 2015

Lauren Smith is outrageously talented!  Lawyer by day, author by night, she is fearless!  Lauren writes contemporary romance, historical romance, gothic novels and more!  While I have never really been interested in the stepbrother/sister genre, I couldn’t turn down an Lauren book.  I am SO glad I didn’t!  I have read the first two books in this series and I am DYING for the last one!  I need to know what happens!  Really, really great series and I highly recommend!

I found this author on Netgalley through her latest series, Oxford Novels, but I quickly consumed her backlist!  This series features sexy young professional ladies and the men they end up with!  What I love most about these books is that they are humorous, sexy and really well written!  Great male characters that make you think differently about office romances!

I actually loved both books in the Covent Gardens series, but this one was based on my favourite Disney movie, so any chance to share it!  The story parallels the awesome movie Tangled, so you know you are getting a story with a strong female lead and a naughty gent!  Wonderful and consistent storytelling is Shana Galen’s strength!

Finding Fraser by kc dyer

finding fraser

I know this isn’t the typical book I review here, but this book was just amazing!  The whole time I read it, I just kept thinking – why didn’t I think of this concept??  The heroine ditches her life to head to Scotland to find her own Jamie Fraser.  Ummm….YES!  Hilarious, sweet and sometimes sad, this book is like a Bridget Jones diary, a dash of Julie and Julia and of course, Outlander!  If you are a fan of the book or the series, than you need to read this book!

Hannah and the Highlander by Sabrina York

hannah and the highlander

I just got the next book in this series and I am so excited to read it over the holidays!  Sexy highlander, a strong lass and a passion that burns!  If you are a fan of kilts, then this is a great book to read!

seven nights to surrender

This is a great book!  It’s not YA, but they are young characters.  It is set in the most romantic city in the world, Paris.  But what happens in Paris, doesn’t stay in Paris.  Seven nights and days spent in the city turn the characters lives upside down.  I loved going along on this whirlwind adventure!

I have missed the past couple of weeks, so I figured I had better get on it!  This week the theme is the top ten debut novels I am looking forward to in 2016.  This is a really hard one as I don’t really know who has debut novels coming out until they are either up on Netgalley, the publisher contacts me or the author generates buzz.  So I am going to post the top ten books I am REALLY looking forward to!

Top Ten Tuesday – Duos

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  Each week there is a new theme to apply to whatever genre of books you like to read.  This week’s theme is great!  If you could get authors to write books together, who would you pair up?

I think this is perfect because one of the series I am reading right now is by two wonderful authors, Amy K Rogers and Ann Marie Walker.  The Chasing Fire series is amazing and the final book will be out very soon!  There are some authors that write together.  VK Sykes is actually husband and wife duo, Vanessa Kelly and Randy Sykes.  I think this is amazing that a husband and wife write together and still stay married!  I can’t even write a grocery list with my husband without an argument.

So here is my dream list of who I would love to see partner up and write awesome romance books!

1.  Lauren Smith and Madeline Martin

Both authors are outstanding and I think they could come up with a great plot and some amazing characters.

2.  Suzanne Enoch and Shana Galen

Both authors write excellent Regency romances with a suspenseful plot.  I can’t even imagine how off the charts a story would be with these two creative minds!

3.  Suzanne Enoch and Samantha Young

Suzanne Enoch created the most amazing character Samantha Jellicoe.  She’s sassy and feisty and oh so much fun!  I desperately want her to write another book with this character.  Samantha Young’s book Hero features a character so much like Sam Jellicoe that it would be awesome for these two to get creative together!

4.  Judith McNaught and Kathleen Woodiwiss

I know that this is never going to happen considering Judith no longer publishes and Kathleen has passed.  But could you imagine what a book written by these two dynamos would be like??

5.  Tamara Gill and Angela Quarles

Both women write excellent time travel novels.  I would love it if they teamed up and wrote a version together!

5.  Lisa Kleypas and Stephanie Laurens

These authors have created some of the very best series I have ever read.  The Cynsters and the Wallflowers were seminal in cementing my everlasting love of historical romances.

6.  Lauren Layne and Janet Nissenson

I have recently discovered both of these authors and their books have made me LOVE contemporary romance.  I want to read everything these authors have written and if they were to write together it would be magic on the page!

7.  Katy Evans and Meredith Wild

Both authors write excellent contemporary romance novels that burn up the pages.  I probably don’t need to elaborate further on this…

8.  Monica McCarty and Kerrigan Byrne

Monica McCarty writes outstanding Scottish historical romance and I recently read Kerrigan Byrne’s Highwayman.  I think the two of them would make a great duo!

9.  Georgia Cates and Nalini Singh

Georgia Cates writes great contemporary romance and her Sin series was fantastic!  Nalini Singh is a very established author and I think they would be an awesome duo as their writing would compliment each other well.

10.  Katherine Bone and Elizabeth Cole

Katherine writes amazing books that feature pirates and Elizabeth creates outstanding mysteries.  Just think of what they could come up with together!

What duos would you like to see?

Top Ten Tuesday – Recommendations

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  The idea is that there is a weekly theme that can be applied to any genre of books you like to read.  The theme this week is a really cool one.  It’s recommending new authors.  So if you liked this one, you’ll love this author…

I think this is a great theme this week.  I often rely on Amazon’s recommendations when looking for an author or a new book to read.  While sometimes they hit the mark, other times the suggestions can be bizarre.  So this week, I will try to cover a range of romance genres and authors I think you will enjoy!

Top Ten Tuesday – Fall TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  Each week features a different them that can be applied to whatever genre of books you like to read.  I find it so fun to makes lists and I like to check out other blogger’s lists as it always seems to add books to my TBR list.

So, this week is fitting then!  The topic this week is the top books for fall that I am waiting/wanting/hoping/dying to read!

Sensational by Janet Nissenson

This is the final book in the series and I have adored every book I have read by her.  The books aren’t full of perfect characters, but I think that is what draws me in.  If you haven’t read any of her work yet – check her out!

The Striker by Monica McCarty

the striker

I have adored the Highland Guard series since the Chief came out.  The series is winding to a close and I think there are two more books to go.  It’s always hard to finish a series, but the best part is that there is a ton of books to go back and re-read!

Cold Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas

cold hearted rake

It seems like an eternity since the master Lisa Kleypas published a historical romance book.  This book comes out the end of October and I am super excited to read this book!

One King’s Way by Samantha Young

one kings way

It’s a novella that is part of the On Dublin Street series and Samantha has been teasing glimpses of this book on instagram lately.  I am really looking forward to this book as it seems like it has her signature style all over it!

A Gentleman for All Seasons featuring stories by Shana Galen, Vanessa Kelly, Theresa Romain and Kate Noble

a gentleman for all seasons

What is not to love?  Four stories in one!  I love the writing of all these ladies, so I can’t wait!

Some Like It Scot by Suzanne Enoch

some like it scot

I have really enjoyed this series and the brawn Highlanders Suzanne Enoch has brought to life.  The cover of this book would encourage me to get it regardless of who wrote it!  I am excited for Bear’s story and I am sure it will be a scorcher!

The Gilded Chain by Lauren Smith

tje gilded chain

Lauren Smith is a supremely talented author and there is not much that she can’t write about.  Her erotic series has been really enjoyable and the latest one is about to come out!  Can’t wait!

Duke of Scandal by Gaelen Foley

duke of scandal

I really like her work, but for some reason she is not as well known as other authors.  This is a new series she has coming out and I have it pre-ordered already!

Steal Me by Lauren Layne

steal me

I have recently discovered the work of Lauren Layne and loved her work so much that I blew through like 3 series over a weekend.  I actually did an author review, which you can check out here.  This book looks great and features New York City’s finest.  Can’t wait!

The Hunter by Kerrigan Byrne

the hunter

Ok, so I am cheating a little.  This book comes out in February, but I loved her book the Highwayman so much that I am really looking forward to reading another book by her!
