Bedding the Highlander

Bedding the Highlander by Sabrina York

bedding the highlander

Overview by Publisher:

Only a Scot can steal her heart.
There’s nothing ladylike about Katherine Killin. She’s a spitfire who cannot be tamed. To rid himself of her, and to honor a truce set by the Duke of Glencoe, her father agrees to wed her to his clan’s mortal enemy, Ben Rannoch. But when Katherine meets the enticingly masculine Kirk Rannoch, brother of her betrothed, she suddenly craves domination.

There is a lot to love in this short book!  Sabrina York is a great author and she writes about Scotland really well!

The story is about mistaken identity and some feminine wiles used to secure a particular result.  Katherine has been given away as a bride to settle a Highland feud.  While she is not sad to leave her horrible clan and father, she doesn’t want to be wed to the enemy.

She inadvertently runs into her intended’s brother.  Concealing her identity from him, she doesn’t hide her attraction.  Either does Kirk.  Sabrina York uses the natural beauty of Scotland to give the lovers-to-be a lush and beautiful landscape to explore each other.

This book has a little bit of everything that makes historical Scottish fiction worth reading.  There are clan feuds, long lost family members, sword fights and family  dynamics.  While this is a short book, there is a lot woven together in a great story!

Lana and the Laird

Lana and the Laird by Sabrina York

lana and the laird

Overview by Publisher:

Lachlan Sinclair cannot escape his accursed heritage in his Highlands homeland. Somewhat resigned to the fate that destroyed his ancestors, he is prepared to live his life without an heir, without a wife—without love. But when he meets the woman of his dreams in the flesh, the bewitching lass makes him want to throw away his cursed, restrained existence…and unleash the highlander within…

Lana Dounreay has only seen the Duke of Caithness in her dreams as a wild, rugged man, while in reality, his life has been cramped by curses and cravats. He may have forgone his kilt and lost his brogue, but Lana knows that the heart of a true Scotsman beats within his broad, muscular chest. But what plans does the mysterious, passionate Lachlan have in mind for her—and can she convince him that love is stronger than all else?

I love this series!  It started with Hannah and the Highlander and continued with Susana and the Scot.  Finally, Lana the third sister gets her story told.  You know that you have really enjoyed a series when you want to go back and re-read the other stories so that you can absorb the subtle facts and plot again.

Lana is the sister of Hannah and Susana.  She has a gift that many would see as a curse.  She can speak with and see the dead.  I don’t know why, but her gentleness and views reminded me somewhat of Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter.  Lana is a lot more sexy than Luna, but I loved her self-possession and outlook on life.

Lana has been having dreams for years of the men who have come into their lives.  First, Hannah’s husband Alexander, then Andrew who was meant for Susana and finally a braw Scottish man.  He is a mystery to her, except she knows their fates are intertwined and he is important to her.

Lachlan is a Scottish duke who has been living in London all his life.  Orphaned at a young age, his cousin has raised him and kept him from Scotland where he is overlord of many barons.  Lachlan is a Sinclair and that means he has inherited the curse on his family.  All male heirs die at the age of 30.  Lachlan doesn’t have much longer and he is being haunted by his father to return to Caithness and rebuild the crumbling castle.  While London is all that he has known, he leaves the inhospitable drawing rooms for the moors of Scotland.  While Lachlan is a duke – the holy grail for matchmaking mamas – a Scot is not.  I remember when I read Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught and the character Ian reveals he is half Scottish and Elizabeth is horrified.  The deep prejudice against the Scottish is a realistic element added to the plot.

Another historical aspect is the clearances in the Highlands.  Lachlan approves of the clearances and orders his barons to begin.  I loved how the author showed Lachlan to be an honourable and conscientious lord by having him examine the impact of the clearances.

The love story between Lachlan and Lana was wonderful.  It was like fate pushed the two of them together – as they had both been dreaming about each other for years.  But Lachlan fears for his future as he is soon to turn thirty.  He can’t commit to a life with Lana when he is so uncertain about his own.  This dialed up the passion between the two.  Lana was absolutely certain that Lachlan was for her that she embarks on a siege of seduction that Lachlan can’t withstand!

Lachlan’s family history comes into play and dangerous plots are afoot.  It wouldn’t be a Scottish story without some murder and mayhem!  Blood thirsty Isobel stole the show – as she should at only five years old!

I loved this series and if you are in the mood to spend time with some sexy Scots – this is a series you must pick up!

Susana and The Scot

Susana and the Scot by Sabrina York

susana and the scot

Overview by Netgalley:

Scotland, 1813.

A SCANDALOUS TEMPTATION
Andrew Lochlannach is famous for his conquests, on and off the battlefield. When a fellow warrior challenges him to a kissing contest, he wastes no time in planting his lips on ninety-nine lovely lasses-an impressive feat of seduction that gets him banished to the hinterlands. Still, Andrew has no regrets about his exploits-especially his embrace with the most beguiling woman he’s ever met…

AN UNDENIABLE PASSION
With flaming red hair and a temper to match, Susana is not some innocent farmgirl who gives herself over easily to a man, even one as ruggedly handsome as Andrew. The wicked Scot may have won a kiss from the headstrong beauty in a moment of mutual desire, but Susana refuses to be just another one of his conquests. Andrew must convince the fiery lass that even though he is not playing a game, losing her is not an option…

The first book in this series, Hannah and the Highlander, was such a pleasant surprise!  I loved every minute of reading that book, so of course I had to snatch up the next book when I saw it on Netgalley.

This time, the story revolves around the home that Hannah left behind and her sister, Susana who is guarding the keep.  Susana was a great character! She is feisty and quick witted.  I loved that she would shoot her would-be-suitors in the arse to keep them away!  Her daughter Isobel was such a treasure.  Many question if Isobel is really only five years old and I had the exact same thoughts! I loved the pair that the two made.

Andrew has come to secure the keep and provide additional forces.  From the start it is a battle of wits and control between Andrew and Susana.  But it is about more than the protection of the keep.  In a past life these two knew each other and the story revolves around them finding their way back to each other.

So why will you like this book?  Why should you invest time in this series?  Well, there is a very hot Scot who has a wicked sense of humour and a great smile to charm with.  Second, I am such a sucker for the reunited lovers trope.  Sabrina York does a great job in keeping the reader on the edge of their seat to see who will capitulate first and it’s delicious when they do!  Finally, this book is more than just a book about Scotland, or keeps or danger.  It has all of those things, but the underlying themes of forgiveness, family and redemption are so finely developed.  I love a story where the undertones and themes breathe life into the characters and make them multi-dimensional.

If you are a fan of Scottish historical romances, then add this book, along with Hannah and the Highlander to your list!  ASAP!

Top Ten Tuesday – Best of 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  Each week features a different theme that can be applied to whatever genre of books you like to read.  This week the theme is the best books of 2015!  What a fun topic – and really hard!  I have read so many books this year and it has been hard to whittle the list down to ten (so there may be more!)  What is the best book you have read this year?

Lauren Smith is outrageously talented!  Lawyer by day, author by night, she is fearless!  Lauren writes contemporary romance, historical romance, gothic novels and more!  While I have never really been interested in the stepbrother/sister genre, I couldn’t turn down an Lauren book.  I am SO glad I didn’t!  I have read the first two books in this series and I am DYING for the last one!  I need to know what happens!  Really, really great series and I highly recommend!

I found this author on Netgalley through her latest series, Oxford Novels, but I quickly consumed her backlist!  This series features sexy young professional ladies and the men they end up with!  What I love most about these books is that they are humorous, sexy and really well written!  Great male characters that make you think differently about office romances!

The Rogue You Know by Shana Galen

the rogue you know

I actually loved both books in the Covent Gardens series, but this one was based on my favourite Disney movie, so any chance to share it!  The story parallels the awesome movie Tangled, so you know you are getting a story with a strong female lead and a naughty gent!  Wonderful and consistent storytelling is Shana Galen’s strength!

Finding Fraser by kc dyer

finding fraser

I know this isn’t the typical book I review here, but this book was just amazing!  The whole time I read it, I just kept thinking – why didn’t I think of this concept??  The heroine ditches her life to head to Scotland to find her own Jamie Fraser.  Ummm….YES!  Hilarious, sweet and sometimes sad, this book is like a Bridget Jones diary, a dash of Julie and Julia and of course, Outlander!  If you are a fan of the book or the series, than you need to read this book!

Hannah and the Highlander by Sabrina York

hannah and the highlander

I just got the next book in this series and I am so excited to read it over the holidays!  Sexy highlander, a strong lass and a passion that burns!  If you are a fan of kilts, then this is a great book to read!

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and The Bookish. Each week features a different theme that can be applied to whatever genre of books you like to read.

I have missed the past couple of weeks, so I figured I had better get on it!  This week the theme is the top ten debut novels I am looking forward to in 2016.  This is a really hard one as I don’t really know who has debut novels coming out until they are either up on Netgalley, the publisher contacts me or the author generates buzz.  So I am going to post the top ten books I am REALLY looking forward to!

Hannah and the Highlander

Hannah and the Highlander by Sabrina York

hannah and the highlander

Overview by Amazon:

Highlanders are her weakness.
Hannah Dounreay has no time for suitors who only seem interested in her family’s land, which she manages as well as any man. If she marries, she wants to be loved for the educated, independent woman she is. But when a strong, silent-and spectacularly handsome-Highlander saves her from a violent attack, her heart is stirred. Who is this man? And if he asks for Hannah’s hand, will she be able to resist him?

Love is the most powerful weapon of all.
Alexander Lochlannach, Laird of Dunnet, has no time to lose. The Highlands are in an uproar as clans battle for land-without mercy-and Alexander can’t afford to fall for the wildly attractive, strong-willed Hannah. What’s more, he has a desperate secret, one that could destroy them both. But as their attraction turns into an all-consuming passion, Alexander has no choice but to prove to Hannah that he’s the only man for her-body and soul…in Hannah and the Highlander.

I loved this book!  Hannah was such a great character and I adored the plot, setting, passion and politics.  The book opens with the reality of the day.  In the Highlands, the Clearances have been happening at an alarming rate.  I think what I really liked about this element in the book was that in most Regency novels I have read, this topic is never covered.  I think back to one of my favourite books, Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught and the characters head to Scotland for a week away, but there is no mention of the unrest.  The book highlights how the English make decrees in London, but turn a blind eye to the reality of the situation.  I really like when a book teaches me historical facts that I had not known or understood.

Hannah is feisty and strong.  She has run Reay for her family for years.  She manages everything from the laundry, to the correspondence and even the menus.  She expects to be a partner in whatever marriage she accepts.  Her current suitors are not exactly stellar.  Olrig is a gross pig and Neill tries to rape her.  She is saved by Alexander, Baron of Dunnet.  Their first meeting is a memorable one.  Hannah kisses him and is mortified when he walks away, but to Alexander, he is entranced with her.  So he offers for her.

With their marriage, the story really gets going.  Hannah has to control everything and it is very hard for her to accept the status quo.  I really loved Alexander.  Not only is he a hot Highlander, he has huge integrity and pride.  What was so awesome about Alexander is the past he has overcome.  Alexander leaves notes for Hannah every morning on her pillow.  She finds them irritating at first, until she comes to understand how hard words are for him.  Alexander stutters and he feels so much anxiety and excitement when he is near Hannah that he just knows he will stumble over his words.  I loved that the author makes the character’s flaw his strength.

The secondary characters are fantastic in this book!  Hannah has two other sisters and they will be getting a book of their own.  Alexander’s brother is the flirty, fun one and his kissing contest had me laughing out loud.  The Duke of Caithness was such an interesting character and he created a lot of conflict that moved the plot forward.  I can’t wait for Lana’s story because I am sure that the Duke will be a big part of it!

Overall, this book was just awesome!  Adventure, really steamy bedroom scenes and politics make this book a must read!
