Hardass + Total Dick + Bad Bitch = AWESOME

The Granade Brothers Series…I read one book and couldn’t stop until I had finished the whole series!  This author can write!  Bad, bad boys and very hot and sassy women make for amazing stories!

Hardass by Christina Saunders

Overview by Publisher:

I cave in to no one. My hardass exterior is what makes me one of the hottest defense lawyers around. It’s why I’m the perfect guy to defend the notorious Bayou Butcher serial killer – and why I’ll come out on top.

Except this new associate I’ve hired is unnaturally skilled at putting chinks in my well-constructed armor. Her brazen talk and fiery attitude make me want to take control of her and silence her – in ways that will keep both of us busy till dawn. She drives me absolutely 100% crazy, but I need her for this case. I need her in my bed. I need her to let loose the man within me who fights with rage and loves with scorching desire…

This was the first book I read in the series.  Right away I knew I was going to love it!  This book is published by St. Martin’s Press section called Swerve, which features erotic stories.  Yes, there is hot and heavy sex in the book, but more importantly, there is an intelligent and interesting story.

We meet Caroline who is an associate at a law firm.  She is the class clown and a sassy one at that.  She has the major hots for her boss, Washington Granade.  He’s full man – tall, broad shouldered and sexy as hell.  How could she not be into him, especially when he works a courtroom like a boss.

Christine gets assigned to a serial murder case with Wash.  She quickly finds out that learning the law is not all she’s going to be working on.  Wash is into her as much as she wants him.  The sex between the two is off the charts.  Erotic, heavy and very, very satisfying.

What was so interesting about this story was the legal work the pair do.  The author is a former attorney and it shows with her legal expertise.  Kudos to her for making legal banalities so fascinating and engaging.

I also really enjoyed that the narrative alternated between Christine and Wash.  It was great to learn both perspectives as the story unfolded.  This is a technique that the author uses for all the Granade books.

I enjoyed this book so much that as soon as I finished it, I started the next one in the series!

Total Dick by Christina Saunders

total dick

Overview by Publisher:

I’m your classic skirt chaser. A womanizer. A total d*ck. My reputation is dirtier than a New Orleans street after a Mardi Gras parade. I take unwinnable cases and win them. Where people see defeat, I see a big fat paycheck. And when most men see rejection, it’s because the sexiest woman at the bar has already promised to go home with me.

But Scarlett Carmichael is the one person I can’t seem to conquer. This too-cool former debutante has it all—class, attitude, and a body that begs to be worshipped. I’ve never worked with a person like her before—hell, I’ve never played nice with anyone before in my life, and I’m not about to start with her. This woman wasn’t meant to be played nicely with. It’s going to be dirty. It’s going to be hot. She’s about to spend a lot of time with the biggest d*ck in town. And she’s going to love every minute of it…

I LOVE when a man underestimates a woman and has to eat his words.  Kennedy almost blows his shot at a great case and the sexy Scarlett due to his ignorance.  When we first meet Kennedy, he seems one step above ‘ambulance chaser’, but he’s a smart lawyer who likes to live the frat boy lifestyle.

That changes when he meets Scarlett.  She comes from one of those families in New Orleans that has butlers, mint juleps and is part of the Junior League.  Kennedy isn’t in her league and he wants to dirty her up.

Kennedy is brought in to Scarlett’s law firm to co-counsel a case with her.  It involves corporate espionage and hackers.  I found the plot of the story so interesting – it could have been ripped from the headlines of any newspaper.  The investigative story was so well done, that at times I had to remember this wasn’t a James Patterson or Steven Berry novel.  It helped that Kennedy couldn’t really go longer than five minutes without groping or coming onto Scarlett.

Scarlett plays the lady, but she really wants to be nasty with Kennedy.  The sex between the two is so hot.  I really enjoyed the sexy banter between the two and how Kennedy reminded me of a puppy following Scarlett around for her attention.

Their legal case turns deadly dangerous and Kennedy must protect Scarlett, but of course she demands equal ground.  The high drama puts their relationship into perspective and it was so gratifying to see Kennedy be serious for once!  There is something so great about the player getting played.  Kennedy was a love and leave them kind of guy, yet Scarlett isn’t the kind of woman you let walk away.  I really enjoyed how Kennedy had to work for her attention.

The ending to this book was so exciting.  I loved all the legal investigation and how the conclusion came to be!  This was a fantastic book – the sex was off the charts, the characters were so engaging and the plot was exciting!

Bad Bitch by Christina Saunders

bad bitch

Overview by Publisher:

They call me the Bad Bitch. A lesser woman might get her panties in a twist over it, but me? I’m the one who does the twisting. Whether it’s in the courtroom or in the bedroom, I’ve never let anyone – much less a man – get the upper hand.

Except for that jerk attorney Lincoln Granade. He’s dark, mysterious, smoking hot and sexy as hell. He’s nothing but a bad, bad boy playing the part of an up and coming premiere attorney. I’m not worried about losing in a head to head battle with this guy. But he gets me all hot and bothered in a way no man has ever done before. I don’t like a person being under my skin this much. It makes me want to let go of all control, makes me want to give in. This dangerous man makes me want to submit to him completely, again, and again, and again…

Evan is a bad, bad bitch.  I was somewhat shocked at how she spoke to people and her very masculine attitudes to business.  When she sleeps with an associate and then fires him because he was a bad lay, I was really taken aback.

It takes a very strong, alpha male to go toe to toe with a bitch.  Enter Lincoln.  He has come from New Orleans to New York to represent the federal government against Evan’s shitty client who runs Ponzi schemes against senior citizens.  I loved that the plot was so relevant to reality and what is happening in the world.  It made the story so engaging because it wasn’t some obscure or boring legal battle – it was relatable to anyone who reads the news.

Lincoln meets Evan in a lawyer hangout after work.  He knows that she is a ball buster and very sexual.  When she tries to be the aggressor, he knocks the wind out of her sails and asks her to go f@*k.  Like I said, it takes a strong man to win the battle with this aggressive woman who is use to being the pursuer.  The go back to her place and have some of the naughtiest and hottest sex I have read about!

It’s mind games between these two from the start.  Like a sexy chess game, they are always trying to be one or five steps ahead.  It doesn’t matter that they are on opposite sides of the same case (which I kind of thought was unethical, but it’s fiction).  Lincoln is the big dog of the Granade brothers – dark and dangerous.  He has a checkered past and has the physical scars to prove it.

What I loved about Evan is that she is so smart!  I love a smart woman who plots and plans.  She is a brilliant attorney and is very savvy.  She was also kind of scary and I felt great pity for the people who worked for her.  I could NEVER imagine talking or treating co-workers or employees or anyone the way she did – but reading about someone like her is refreshing!

Lincoln is man enough to take her on.  With any other man, she would steamroll right over them.  But Lincoln has her number and is damaged like her that he can relate and understand her.

The legal mess the two are in has some great surprises and twists to the story.  I did not see the resolution coming – which was fantastic!  I love being surprised!

The sex between the two is the darkest of the three Granade books.  While not BDSM, there is a darkness to the sex.  Lincoln and Evan are not light and happy people.  They are deeply passionate people who have sex like they do everything else in life.

Highly recommend this book and the series!

One With You

One With You (Crossfire Series) by Sylvia Day

one with you

Overview By Amazon:

Gideon Cross. Falling in love with him was the easiest thing I’ve ever done. It happened instantly. Completely. Irrevocably.

Marrying him was a dream come true. Staying married to him is the fight of my life. Love transforms. Ours is both a refuge from the storm and the most violent of tempests. Two damaged souls entwined as one.

We have bared our deepest, ugliest secrets to one another. Gideon is the mirror that reflects all my flaws … and all the beauty I couldn’t see. He has given me everything. Now, I must prove I can be the rock, the shelter for him that he is for me. Together, we could stand against those who work so viciously to come between us.

But our greatest battle may lie within the very vows that give us strength. Committing to love was only the beginning. Fighting for it will either set us free … or break us apart.

Heartbreakingly and seductively poignant, One with You is the breathlessly awaited finale to the Crossfire saga, the searing love story that has captivated millions of readers worldwide.

Well…it’s over.  Crossfire is now complete.  For a series that was to be a trilogy, then extended to five books with an eon in between, it’s all done now.

If you haven’t read this book or the series, you can catch up here and here.  Be aware that I will likely have some spoilers for the other books and this one…so turn back now!

We open right where the last book left off.  Gideon and Eva at the coffee shop, working on their relationship.  Eva takes him back, but with parameters.  These two with their conditions – its enough to make me crazy!

Eva wants to refrain to have sex until they have their second wedding in a month’s time.  If you have read the other books, you are well aware that the sex is a huge part of the relationship.  I think I was just as disturbed as Gideon when Eva demands this.  Even when she explains that she wants to have the normal flirting and making out type of relationship, it was like closing the barn door after the horse has already left.  Yes, their flirting and sexy talk was hot, but it was a good 40% into the book before she breaks down.  And yes, I was counting the pages!

The book is told from alternating perspectives, so once again we get to see what both characters are thinking.  For this book, more than the others, it made sense and worked well.  There were a lot of loose ends to string together, so we needed to hear from both of them for it to conclude well.

Things on Eva’s plate:  her job, planning the wedding, working on Crossroads Charity, partnering with Gideon as a team, helping Cary and uniting their families.

Things on Gideon’s plate:  dealing with business, dealing with his mother, working though therapy, and putting out the numerous fires as they come up.

Eva gets Gideon a puppy.  At first I really didn’t know why this was added to the plot, but it turned out to be effective in the end.

The writing style was consistent with the others in the series, sometime flowery and poetic.  The sex was still just as hot and consuming (once the drought was over).  Gideon and Eva have some of the hottest sex scenes I have ever read.  In fact, I could probably quote some of the scenes from the previous books.  Since there is a shit load of plot happening, the sex isn’t as prolific as the past, but still just as intense and consuming.  There is a strength between the two that has been missing in the past.  They have trust now and they are battling things together – not each other.  This is a huge change compared to the emotional see-saw they have taken part of in the past.

We see a lot more of family in this book.  Their therapist comments to Gideon that he wants Eva to himself on his island, but she loves to be surrounded by family and her friends.  I loved how family from Victor, to Angus to Ireland and Chris were incorporated into the story.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a Crossfire book without startling and shocking events happening.  I have to say the Bachelor party was highly engaging.  I liked spending time with Gideon and his friends.  The plot with Monica (Eva’s slightly hysterical mother) was surprising.  I liked how Eva included her mother more in her life and turned to her for advice, but I never saw the complications coming – she was one character that I thought was straightforward!  I really couldn’t see how this plot point with Monica was important.  It wasn’t essential to the relationship of Gideon and Eva and it didn’t really move the storyline anywhere.  I’m reluctant to say more so I don’t ruin it, but something about this just didn’t sit well with me.

Overall, this book packed a lot into it.  I realized at the end of the book when I read Sylvia Day’s note that this whole story – 5 BOOKS – takes place over only 3 months.  It’s a lot of plot to squeeze it and A LOT of sex.  I think this book was what it needed to be.  Am I happy with the conclusion?  Yes, I am a satisfied reader and have the answers I wanted.

Hawke (Cold Fury Novel) by Sawyer Bennett

Overview by Publisher:

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.
Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

God, I love hockey novels!  And I REALLY love hockey themed books written by Sawyer Bennett.  This woman can write!  She can take characters that I have little in common with and make them so engaging!

The story opens with a young Hawke and Vale and the night after a rowdy party.  I don’t think I have ever partied as hard as they have, so that was tough to relate to.  Vale doesn’t come to say goodbye to Hawke as he is leaving for his shot at the NHL again.  In fact, she breaks his heart and sends him away without her love.

Seven years later, Hawke is new the Cold Fury franchise and so is Vale.  It was coincidence that has them crossing paths so many years later.  Hawke is now a top tier player and Vale is a physical trainer in sports medicine.  So much has now changed…

Vale no longer has multiple face piercings and jagged haircuts, she is all business now.    Hawke is surprised by the package but still sees the woman he can’t forget.  Vale is cool and professional to her former love, but she can’t deny the attraction is still there.

Through the memories and thoughts of Hawke and Vale, we learn about their previous relationship. How hot it was, how wild the sex, how out of control their lives were and how they have matured past those teen years.  So you know that if things were that hot in the past, they will get hot again!

These two are just so sexy together.  I couldn’t help but be enraptured with their romance and lust.  Sawyer Bennett knows how to write sex scenes that women want to read.  She captures the nuances and images that arrest the attention and heighten the reading experience.

But it isn’t just sex that the author writes well, she crafts stories with great emotional depth.  In fact, I was pleasantly surprised how emotional the story became.  There was a lot of twists and turns and plot points that I did not see coming.  I enjoy a story that has the capacity to surprise me.

As a Canadian, I truly appreciated the research the author did regarding our national pastime.  She accurately describes the junior minor hockey league system and pays homage to Sydney, Nova Scotia.  It’s just touches like this that add to the authenticity of the story.

I am loving this series!  I really have a thing for sports contemporary romance books, and this series in particular.  Sawyer Bennett is a terrific author.  She creates such dynamic characters and seriously sexy men!  With each book, I fall a little more in love with her!

Fighting Dirty

Fighting Dirty by Lori Foster

Overview by Publisher:

With the life he’s led and the muscles he’s gained, Armie Jacobson isn’t afraid of anything. Except maybe Merissa Colter’s effect on him. It’s not just that she’s his best friend’s little sister. Fact is, she deserves better. Women pursue him for one night of pleasure, and that’s all he wants to offer. Until rescuing Merissa from a robbery leads to the most erotic encounter of his life.

Good girl meets bad boy. It’s a story that rarely ends well. But Merissa is taking matters into her own hands. No matter how he views himself, the Armie she knows is brave, honorable and completely loyal. And as past demons and present-day danger collide, they’re both about to learn what’s truly worth fighting for…

You know what is great about dating a mixed martial arts athlete?  You never have to worry about anyone hurting you.  Merissa is finally getting to experience Armie as more than her brother’s friend.  She has had a huge crush on him for years and finally, he is reciprocating her lust.  I think I could feel how giddy Merissa was to finally end up in his bed.

The downside to dating a MMA fighter is the throngs of women who throw themselves at your guy.  Armie is a total man whore until he gets with Merissa.  He is not ashamed of his past, but his previous experiences are definitely there.

Armie has always felt that he wasn’t good enough for Merissa.  He is best friends with her very protective brother and is worried that he is not fit for her.  This is a familiar refrain in romance novels, but I liked how this was explored.

The secondary characters have had their own books to explore their relationships.  They are a very carnal group and sex talk frequently comes up – so if you are uncomfortable reading that you are forewarned.  The sex between Merissa and Armie is very hot!  This book does not shy away from the happenings in the bedroom.  Armie is a great lover and its fun to read about how he uses his vast experience to satisfy Merissa.

Not only is Armie getting ready for his first big fight, there is the matter of Merissa’s safety.  I liked that the story was multi-dimensional on that account.  There was the relationship between the two, the upcoming fight and the strange and violent incidents happening to Merissa.  All of these things add depth to the story.

If you are a fan of MMA and brother’s friend-little sister romances, you will enjoy this book!

Tangled by Emma Chase

Overview by Amazon:

Drew Evans is handsome and arrogant, he makes multimillion dollar business deals and seduces New York’s most beautiful women with just a smile. So why has he been shuttered in his apartment for seven days, miserable and depressed? He’ll tell you he has the flu. But we all know that’s not really true.

Katherine Brooks is brilliant, beautiful and ambitious. When Kate is hired as the new associate at Drew’s father’s investment banking firm, every aspect of the dashing playboy’s life is thrown into a tailspin. The professional competition she brings is unnerving, his attraction to her is distracting, his failure to entice her into his bed is exasperating.

Tangled is not your mother’s romance novel. It is an outrageous, passionate, witty narrative about a man who knows a lot about women…just not as much as he thinks. As he tells his story, Drew learns the one thing he never wanted in life, is the only thing he can’t live without.

So this book has been out for a while, but I keep meaning to read it. It has been a cold and dreary weekend and I thought it was a perfect time to laugh and enjoy this book.

What makes this book so unique is that it is told from the perspective of the male lead character, Drew. He is at times an insufferable ass, but really honest. He provides all sorts of insights into the male mind. I really want to ask the author how she developed this character. In fact, with each admission or wisdom he shared, I wanted to know if men really think this way and if so, who told her?!

Drew is confident, engaging and spoiled. He has a very active sex life and follows bachelorhood rules to the T. He works at his father’s investment firm and has been very successful. Like, really successful! His world tilts on it’s access when he meets Kate. Not only is she beautiful, but she has the brains and the business acumen to challenge him. Drew vacilitates between wanting to have hot, passionate sex and beating her at business. The battle between the two was really hot and fun! I think that is what I enjoyed so much about this story. It was fun! It made me laugh – a lot! Seeing Drew get knocked down a peg or two was really enjoyable.

The love story between Kate and Drew was really well developed. I loved how their wants and needs were deeply explored. The author really works hard to create a relationship that makes you feel desperate to see a happy ending. Each time Drew acted like an idiot or Kate walked away, my heart was in my throat. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next to them!

While this story may seem really light hearted, it does have deep emotional moments. At times, it made me cry. I found this book to be really fulfilling as well as enjoyable. The novelty of having it told from the male perspective was not a gimmick and regardless of what person shared the tale, it still was an amazing romance.

If you are like me and haven’t got around to reading this book yet, make time one lazy afternoon and you won’t be sorry!

I Wish You Were Mine

I Wish You Were Mine (Oxford Series) by Lauren Layne

i wish you were mine

Overview by Netgalley:

A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.

Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

Oh how I love the men of Oxford Magazine!  The whole gang is back, but this time we get to know Jackson a lot better.  He has recently joined the team after his professional NFL career went up in smoke.  Bitter, resentful and standoffish, Jackson is not adjusting well to life and New York City.
Jackson is also just getting out of a horrific divorce.  His ex wife Madison is a true self-centered bitch.  She cheats on him and leaves him when the chips are down.  I loved that Lauren Layne made her a Housewife of the NFL – such a fun tweak!  This book felt a little like reading about  forbidden love – the ex-step sister and the brother-in-law.  I think that added an element of spice to an already hot story.  The chemistry they have is off the charts and the sex scenes are downright addictive to read.

Why should you read this book?  Well, Lauren Layne has chemistry down to a science.  She creates lust and passion between characters that is exciting to read. She doesn’t shy away from making her characters human – meaning that they screw up.  It’s how they deal with it that makes me love her writing.

Lauren Layne has created a wonderful atmosphere of the kind of life in New York City that most of us would give our right arm to have lived in our twenties.  Awesome job, fun group of friends and the most exciting city to explore.  I loved the camaraderie that the group at Oxford has.  This is part of the charm of Lauren’s books.  While each book can be read as a standalone, it is so fun following each of these characters as they get their shot at love.

For those that have been following this series, the author gives a great sneak peek at resident manwhore Lincoln and it looks like his story is next!

Wicked Lust

Wicked Lust (The Wicked Horse Series, Book 2) by Sawyer Bennett

wicked lust

Overview by Amazon:

Cain Bonham is as big and bad as they come. After serving in the Marines, he’s returned home to Wyoming and now works as head of security at the exclusive sex club, The Wicked Horse. His job is to protect not only the patrons, but to zealously guard the secret existence of the club itself.

Sloane Preston is all about discovering secrets. As an undercover reporter, she’s determined to reveal the truth behind the facade of The Wicked Horse and expose it for all the world to see. She just didn’t count on her pathway into the club coming at the hands of one gorgeously scarred and bad ass bouncer who manages to easily possess her body and soul.

While Cain’s not looking for anyone to catch his eye, Sloane did it all the same, and he’s not bemoaning the fact that she’s as wickedly kinky as he is. As both get caught up in the sinful fantasies that only The Wicked Horse can create, secrets and loyalties will be tested and hearts will risk being broken.

Oh My God! This book is on fire! I actually had to ask myself at some times if I was really reading what I thought I was! This book is like sex wrapped up in a great story and delivered to satisfy your deepest desires.

This is the second book by Sawyer Bennett in the Wicked Horse series that centres around characters who are involved in the Silo, a BDSM sex club. While most books I read have great vanilla sex in them, occasionally I read books that delve into deeper territory. I thought this book was great! The sex was erotic, sensual, surprising and kinky, but the book is not only defined by sex. There is a really strong story here as well.

Sloane (I love this name) has come to Wyoming to discover what connection the Governor has to the kinky sex club and write an expose for the political magazine she writes for. From the start, she is conflicted and certain there is no story there. She gets close to Cain as her way to find any information. What starts out as a motive, quickly becomes something much deeper when she blurs the lines between professional and personal.

What had me on the edge of my seat was the reality of what was going to happen. Sloane and Cain may have found each other in the wilderness of Jackson, but Sloane isn’t free to start a relationship, nor stay in Jackson forever. What would happen when the truth came out? AND you KNOW the truth will come out because they can’t get to their happily ever after without it. I was so tense reading because I was very stressed out for Sloane! That is how worked up I was about this book! That is the mark of a great read!

The sex is off the charts. Like I said before, I have read kinky books, but this one really captured my attention. Cain is a master at sex and BDSM and some of the stuff he does is shocking, but oh so hot! He really brings out the inner vixen in Sloane and I was thinking he may end up being my new book boyfriend as I was reading.

If you like hot, hot, hot stories that have a suspenseful plot and solid characters, than you need to pick up this book! I definitely plan to pick up the first one in the series as soon as I can!

A Brazen Bargain

A Brazen Bargain by Laura Trentham

a brazen bargain

Overview by Netgalley:

Love soothes the deepest of scars.Spies and Lovers, Book 2

Minerva Bellingham is at her wits’ end. Her younger brother, Simon, will have them penniless and on the streets if his extravagant gambling habit isn’t curtailed. An enormous debt to Lord Rafe Drummond is the final indignity.Signing over her dowry is their only choice. Until Lord Drummond suggests something much more scandalous. She can keep her dowry—in exchange for the Bellinghams working three months as a housemaid and stable boy.

Scarred from his service to the Crown, Rafe recognizes the young Simon Bellingham has the makings of a good duke. Minerva is a different story. Her pure, delicate beauty only underscores Rafe’s tarnished, bleak soul.Yet he delights in cracking Minerva’s icy reserve to reveal a fiery, stubborn woman. And Minerva discovers the gruff master of Wintermarsh has the heart of a poet. But before they can find a future safe in each other’s arms, a menace from Simon’s licentious past slithers back into their lives, forcing Rafe to plan the most important rescue mission of his life.

Warning: Contains a paragon of the beau monde who gets the hang of polishing silver, and a master of the house who’d like her to make his bed—preferably with him in it. Also passion unleashed with the mere touch of a finger. Readers are encouraged to swoon.

I feel like I have read this book before – do you ever get that feeling?  It could be that this trope has been a favourite with authors.  Whatever it reminds me of, I really enjoyed reading this book.

Rafe was just my kind of guy.  Big, brawny and confident.  While he has a dark past, I never felt scared for Minerva or worried that he would hurt her.  I really liked how the author explored the trauma men experienced returning from the war with Napoleon.  Many books have touched on this, but for some reason, it really resonated with me this time.  I think it has to do with the skilled story telling of Laura Trentham.  While Rafe’s issues don’t overwhelm the book or the characters, it has enough of an impact that it really stayed with me as the reader.

Minerva was a great character.  I really admired how she dealt with her wastrel brother.  While young, Simon was being led astray with devastating consequences.  It also made me love Rafe even more for taking Simon on as a worthwhile challenge. Minerva has to accompany Simon to do his penance and yet she made it seem like a wonderful adventure.

The relationship between the two lead characters was a slow burn, but not one that left you frustrated.  Rather, it was a perfect build up to the ultimate conclusion.  Minerva and Rafe both had to bend in order to make the relationship viable.  I adored seeing them inch one step closer.

I found this to be an exciting and interesting book.  While Minerva was never really a servant, she learned just as much from the experience as Simon.  I kind of fell in love with Rafe and really liked the character.  For all his bluster, he was a truly great man!

Definitely check out this book!  Hot and steamy and pulls just enough heartstrings to make it more than just a quick read.

Overview by Amazon:

He’s her first. He’s her everything. He’s her . . . stepbrother.

Kat has always been a good girl. She studies hard and never stays out too late. But when sitting in a pub on her birthday, she realizes she’s a nineteen-year-old virgin who’s never really lived. And she wants tonight to be the night that changes.

Then she sees him walk in. He’s tall, dark, handsome, and straight out of her deepest fantasies. His voice makes her knees feel weak, and when he smiles, she imagines him doing wicked things to her in bed. From the look in his eyes, she knows he’s imagining it too. So when he asks if he can walk her home, she hears herself whisper yes . . .

You know that you really love and trust an author when you take a huge leap of faith because of them.  I have seen the whole step/brother/father/sister genre out there and have really, really not had an interest.  Then Lauren Smith emails me with the news that she has written a new contemporary series featuring a sexy Brit stepbrother book and was I interested?

Lauren Smith has introduced me to the wonderful world of gothic novels.  I have read her historical romance books, her vampire menege book and her BDSM series, the Surrender series, so I figured if I was going to try this genre, who better to start with than Lauren?

AND….once again I was not let down.  This book had me panting!  While Kat is very young, she quickly blossoms under Tristan’s tutelage.  Here I thought people went to Cambridge to study dull subjects!

Lauren hasn’t just made Tristan a stepbrother.  She has made him British, sexy, kinky, rich and a member of the aristocracy!  I honestly can’t imagine a better combination!  I could totally relate to why Kat felt overwhelmed by Tristan’s attention!

Of course Kat and Tristan meet without knowledge that they are to become family – that would be really weird.  It’s a twist of fate that the step brother element happens.  But before that bomb drops, the book spends time developing their relationship and setting the boundaries.

Kat isn’t like typically YA characters like Bella from Twilight.  While she is young and naïve, she doesn’t give into Tristan and lose herself.  She challenges him, questions things and makes decisions that are in her best interest.  I really respected the character for making hard choices that I am not sure I would be able to make if I was in her shoes.  Of course, this is evidence of the excellent writing skills of Lauren Smith that she can create such delicious conflict.  It made me want to keep reading and I literally exhaled with frustration when I realized the story was at an end!  I wanted more!  I wanted to know what happens next!  It’s not a terrible cliffhanger to end on, but a realistic one.  I have to give Lauren credit as she gives a taste of what is to come in the next book, Seduction.

So if you have been skeptical of the step-relation genre like I was, I highly recommend that you try out this book!  I was more than pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book!  The content was great and like always the writing transports you to another place!

The Final Move

The Final Move (A Hometown Hockey Players Novel) by Victoria Denault

the final move

Hockey legend Devin Garrison thought he blew his shot. But his relationship with Callie Caplan just went into overtime.

Sexy, rich, and one of the biggest stars in the NHL, Devin Garrison has always been the one who had it all. That is until his marriage falls apart and he realizes he has to start over. If he’s honest, there has only been one woman who ever really excited him-Callie Caplan. They shared a night that was hotter than the late-summer sun, but in an instant-Callie was gone, pretending it never happened.

Callie Caplan isn’t the wild child people think she is. It’s true she’s avoided relationships, but only because she’s seen how crazy love can be. And her messy, imperfect life is crazy enough without opening her heart to a man-even one as picture perfect as Devin. But when fate brings them back together-just as they need each other most-Devin is determined to convince Callie that what she’s feeling is real. And this final play may be their chance at forever . . .

I love hockey contemporary romance books!  I love this series!

What is so great is that the author really understands hockey and the culture around it.  I recently reviewed a hockey book and commented that Hockey Wives is my new reality show guilty pleasure.  In some respects, this book reminded me of watching an episode.

We have met the other characters in previous books, so it was time for Callie and Devin to get their story told.  Devin’s marriage has imploded and sexy Callie is there to help him pick up the pieces.

I was SO worried that Callie would just be a rebound for Devin, but nope, these two have a history and it makes for a great story.

Callie is like the guy in the book.  Totally commitment phobic, one night stand champion and never serious.  Devin couldn’t wait to settle down and get married with a kid.  Devin is the golden boy of the Garrison gang.  He signed to the NHL first, got the million dollar contracts and the Stanley Cup. He’s struggling particularly hard with the breakdown of his marriage because it’s a failure and he hasn’t experienced that a lot in his life.  I really liked this plot point.  It’s so easy to just write about the golden boy and keep things surface level, but the author really delves into both his and Callie’s fears and emotions.

What was so great about these two was that you realized that they should have been together all along.  Devin’s marriage wasn’t a mistake, but Callie is really the one to set his blood and heart on fire.  However, a girl like Callie isn’t giving in without a serious ass kicking.  This isn’t just an easy-peasy romance.  There were times reading this (on a plane ride today) that I wanted to yell in frustration and kick her!  He’s sexy, has a huge dick and he’s a great guy – what is the problem??

Overall, this is a really fun hockey story that goes deeper than you would expect.  The character development is fantastic.  The hockey scenes were a little less than I would have liked, but we do get one really good fight.  Checking in with the other couples in the series was a terrific addition.  If you are a hockey fan, definitely check out this series!
