ICED

ICED box set by Veronica Forand and Susan Scott Shelley

Iced

Have you ever read a book and start to think that you may have read this before?  At least you hope that you have, otherwise you are reading something that pulls from other material.

That’s what happened when I read this box set!  I realized that I have read one of the stories previously!  BUT – it was a story that I really enjoyed so it was a pleasure to read it again and fall in love with the characters one more time.

Both books featured are hockey themed books.  They feature the players from the Atlantic City Hustlers, which is a team of amazing hockey guys!  I have been a fan of Veronica Forand for a while and this was my first introduction to Susan Scott Shelley.  If you are appreciative of the sport and the hot men who give it their all on the ice, you really need to get to know these authors.  This is a great box set to get started with and then you can devour the rest of the series!

Overview by Publisher:

Don’t fall in love with the man sent to kill you…
Lorena Rubio lived a safe, simple life until she’s kidnapped by Andres “Con” Conesa, right hand man for the drug lord who murdered her sister. Con must keep her at a cabin in the snowy Sierra Nevada Mountains until his boss can confirm or deny the rumor that she’d provided specifics about his drug cartel to the police. Their attraction ignites in the middle of this winter wonderland, but he’s in deep cover for the FBI and has to remain there, and she refuses to attach herself to someone in the criminal world. When the boss arrives a few days and wants Lorena put on ice, Con’s willing to blow his cover to save the woman he craves beyond reason, but he may be too late.

This book is a novella length, but man, can the author pack a lot into it!  This was a great story about the dangerous relationship between Con and Lorena.  Con is the second in command to a dangerous drug lord.  Lorena has crossed the line and now she needs to be taken out of action.  Con is sent to take her away until he receives further instructions.

I really love books where the couple is tucked away with each other.  It forces intimacy and it makes the couple face the reality of what they want from each other.  The formula doesn’t let the reader down with this story! The cozy, snowed in cabin is a haven for Con and Lorena, who both have ghosts chasing them.

I loved the sexy banter between the two and Con was just awesome.  The tough guy exterior fell away with Lorena.  It just sends thrills down my spine when a guy is a great kisser.  Con was the kind of guy who is a face toucher while smooching – sigh!!  He also has some great moves, which unfortunately were not recounted in too many details!!

While the two were tucked away, the world was still spinning.  I really liked how the plot unfolded.  The elements of danger and intrigue developed with great intensity and there were quite a few twists and turns.  It’s not a long book, but a great read for a winter evening!

Top Ten Tuesday – Recommendations

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish.  The idea is that there is a weekly theme that can be applied to any genre of books you like to read.  The theme this week is a really cool one.  It’s recommending new authors.  So if you liked this one, you’ll love this author…

I think this is a great theme this week.  I often rely on Amazon’s recommendations when looking for an author or a new book to read.  While sometimes they hit the mark, other times the suggestions can be bizarre.  So this week, I will try to cover a range of romance genres and authors I think you will enjoy!

Simmering Ice

Simmering on Ice by Veronica Forand and Susan Scott Shelley

simmering ice

Overview by Amazon:

When the gloves come off, she’s worth the penalty…

Physical therapist Annie Davidson is great at her job but unlucky when it comes to love. She’s just out of a bad relationship. A really bad relationship. All she can do is focus on work…that is until she runs into professional hockey player Alec O’Meara. She’s a touch insecure and doesn’t understand why he’s interested in her.

Despite being one of the biggest players on the team, right wing Alec O’Meara prefers finesse over force. After the tragic death of his wife, he likes to keep things loose on and off the ice. But the red-headed Annie challenges his beliefs and makes him think about taking their relationship to the net.

The passion and fun they share is addicting and makes them long for more. But her insecurities that she’s not good enough, and his anxiety over a long-term commitment will keep them apart, unless they can find a way to break through the defenses they’ve built around their hearts.

I was just lamenting that I haven’t read all that many romance novels that feature hockey when this book popped up on Netgalley.  I really liked Veronica Forand’s book Untrue Colors, so I had double the reason to snatch it up!

Coming from a hockey obsessed city, I really enjoy this genre as I understand this game and culture a lot more than other sports like football.  Even in the summer, our newspapers are full of hockey news and gearing up for the season.

This is a short, sweet read.  And by ‘sweet’, I don’t mean chaste.  The story wasn’t about a horndog hockey player who sweet talks and flirts with a puck bunny.  Rather it is about one of the upstanding hockey players who is all class and how he finds love again.

I liked the characters in this book.  They both have wounds that they heal together, yet the past finds a way to rear its ugly head.  Alec is ready to move on from mourning the loss of his wife and finds attraction in the lovely Annie.  She has been through the ringer with her own relationships, including a very toxic one with her mother.

For a short book, the authors pack a great punch.  They manage to delve into the emotional make up of the characters and explore their wants and needs.  It gets pretty steamy too!  If you are a fan of the sports genre then this is a great book to curl up with.  I found that it satisfied on all levels – emotional, sexual, plot and writing.

Top Ten Tuesday

Well, I have had my toughest week since starting this blog.  Work has been a nightmare, my four year old has suddenly decided he wants to be my baby again, I’ve been decorating cookies like a fool and I have had my first DNF (did not finish) book in likely 10 years. This book has made me SO unmotivated to read.  Every time I open up my kindle app, this book stares at me and I feel so much guilt, I had to walk away.

So this week’s theme for the Top Ten Tuesday was something to cheer me up.  It’s my list of top ten books to read this summer.  In Toronto we have not had a great spring and summer is taking it’s sweet time getting here.  So dreaming of laying by the pool with a great book is sustaining me until the warm weather is consistently here!

Here are my top books for this summer:

an indecent invitation breaking a legend simmering ice the bourbon kings release me the heat of the moment the art of sinning hardwired

What books are on your list?  I think I have a great mix of contemporary, sport, spy and historical to keep me company when I can grab some quiet time!

Blog Tour – Untrue Colors

Untrue Colors
by Veronica Forand
Genre: Romantic Thriller
Release Date: March 10, 2015

She’s on the run…

Brilliant art appraiser Alex Northrop’s ex used stolen art to fund his nefarious activities. Now he wants her dead. But it isn’t just herself she’s worried about – if he discovers who she really is, he’ll kill her family.

Professor Henry Chilton is shocked to find a beautiful stranger passed out in his bed, and even more so when the she reveals a priceless painting is a forgery – the painting he’d planned to use to fund a woman’s shelter. She’s mysterious and frightened, and he is determined to discover why.

Alex’s knowledge of art is undeniable–just as Henry’s attraction to her is irresistible. But in order to help him recover the real painting, Alex isn’t just risking exposure…she’s risking her life.

Sometimes when I’m in a boring meeting, I day dream.  It’s so much more fun than thinking about what bills I need to pay or what groceries I need to get.  Sometimes my day dreams involve running away to England and meeting a real life Earl or Duke.  Reading this book was like a fantasy come to life.  Veronica Forand has created a story that weaves together some many compelling elements that should be overwhelming, but instead create a story that is well rounded and complete.

I adored Alex.  She’s a tough cookie and has made choices in her young life that make her mature beyond her years.  I loved that we got to know Alex layer by layer.  The complexities of her personality and choices are revealed slowly and as they fit into the pieces of the puzzle of this story.  When a new trait is revealed, it makes sense and never feels forced.  I felt deep compassion for Alex and the betrayals she has endured.  I think that is what makes her relationship with Henry so important.

Henry is an honest to God Earl.  He is also a former British Navy operative and a professor at Oxford.  While it could have been farfetched that he fell for Alex so quickly and wanted to help her without knowing anything about her, it really didn’t.  Henry’s background is slowly shown just like Alex’s and the more you know about him, the more it seems like kismet that Alex stumbled into his house looking for refuge.

This book covers international theft rings, crime lords, brutality, spies and lots of adventure.  None of it seemed out of place.  From the opening page, the author sets the tone with a fast moving plot that takes you across the globe.  The quiet moments, in beautiful Ripon and Oxford, don’t slow the action down; rather it allows time for deeper character development.  As well as some great intimacy between the characters.

Alex and Henry are a great couple.  Whether chasing each other through the maze at his castle, staking out underground art theft auctions or exploring each other in bed, they shine together.  Their relationship is complicated, yet when they spend time together I adored how they interacted and respected each other.  Even with demons chasing Alex, she still takes the time to enjoy her reprieve with Henry.  She was so light and fun when she would tease him.  Her shopping spree in Ripon was one time I am sure a man was happy to tag along.

The bad guys are really, really bad in this book.  Just when you think you have reached the depths of their depravity, it gets worse.  Alex’s fear is real to the reader and since the book starts with her escape it is clear why she goes to such extremes.  I desperately wanted Henry to be her literal knight in shining armour.  Alex needed a champion and Henry was just so devoted to her that it was beyond tense waiting for the events to unfold.

This is the first book I have read of Veronica Forand’s and I certainly will be reading more as soon as I can!  She is just so talented!  She created a compelling story with great characters that are really well developed.  The plot was so intriguing and held me captive with the twists and turns.  A great

A Bostonian by birth, Veronica Forand regrettably lost her Boston accent while moving from state to state and country to country. Cleveland probably had the most profound effect on her ability to pronounce the “r” in the word “park.”

She does try to return now and then to visit family and eat long neck clams and lobster. Summers on Cape Cod are also high on the priority list.

Her experience in crime involves time as a court appointed attorney. Eventually, she switched fields to where bigger crimes take place, corporate tax. The allure of spending mornings in her pajamas homeschooling her children and writing fascinating fiction inspired her to change careers again. Now that the kids are out of the house (in school), she writes romantic thrillers by day and is the perfect wife and mother at night.

Her experience in romance is limited to one man. Luckily, he’s still finding ways to charm her by taking her on vacations to the south of France, Fiji, and the Green Mountains when time is short. Avid travelers, they love to roam with their kids across continents in pursuit of skiing, scuba diving, and the perfect piece of chocolate.

She’s lived in London, Paris, Geneva, Washington D.C., and the accent destroying city of Cleveland. She currently resides near Philadelphia.
